The Black Guard byC.R. Daems is an entertaining science fiction read. I would describe the genreas science fiction meets military drama meets action/adventure all rolled intoone. The story follows a girl named Rivka, who was given over to the militaryby her father when she was only six years old. She's then raised and trained bythe military and eventually ends up in the elite Black Guard unit. In thisrigorous section of the military, Rivka finally begins to find her purpose andmeaning for her life.
She is not withoutflaws, though, because of her unusual and harsh upbringing. During one of herearly missions, Rivka discovers that the Black Guard may not be what it seemsand this revelation has the power to change everything! I thought The BlackGuard was an interesting book. The format reads as a series of militarymissions but fits with the overall plot and tone of the book, in my opinion. The author does a superb job in keeping the action going and the story movingforward. I also thought Rivka was a good protagonist; she was stubborn, fierceand very flawed but also likeable. I think that her flaws made her seem morerealistic. The author does a good job setting up her past to show and prove whyshe turned out the way she did. I think fans of military drama, action, adventure and science fiction genres will find a lot to like in The Black Guardby C.R. Daems.
