My favorite hardbound sketchbook

In short: I've used this brand for a long time and I carry mine everywhere I go. I love the binding of the sketchbook, very durable and nice. I love the paper, just the right combination for my pencil sketches, and I plan on buying this item for as long as it's around for my personal every-day use.

I got my first copy of this journal in late 2011 from a local Joann's I believe and began sketching in December. I carried this with me for about four years before I had worn it out to the point that it was falling apart (I plan on rebinding it; the repairs I made aren't holding up much now and it looks ugly) and I filled in all but about 10 pages. I love the feel of this paper when I touch it and when I draw my pencils over it; I actually currently have four other brands of hardbound sketchbook, and this is by far the paper I like the best. It's bright white and it's the right mix of smooth and texture (a little more on the smooth side; I can provide pictures if anyone wants to get a closer look at the paper!). It's smooth enough to allow for easy erasing and blending/smudging of graphite, but has enough texture that it holds onto the graphite nicely (if you look at the paper in your hands it looks completely smooth, but if you bring it very close to your face you can see the slight texture). Perhaps it's because I've used this brand and particular sketchbook for so long, but I quite love it and I feel I can do some of my best sketches on it. I work exclusively in pencil in this sketchbook, so I can't attest to how good it withstands against pens/markers, but for pencil artists like myself, this is a very lovely sketchbook and I love the price too.

The sketchbook has a flexible enough binding to allow it to be kept open on its own (although for the first 20 or so pages I have to hold my hand over the left side to keep it all totally flat), but is strong enough to not let the signatures (the little clusters of paper that form the whole stack of pages) fall out of place. The cover is pretty smooth to the touch, not cloth-bound, and has a slight sort of scaly texture. The covers are pretty stiff, but do bend slightly if you exert some force to try to bend them.

Now, as for durability, I made the mistake long ago of decorating this journal with rhinestone stickers and gluing on little faux gemstones and eventually that lead to the deterioration of the cover and made the black, shiny material over the book board peel off and that lead to the whole thing starting to fall apart, so I don't recommend trying to put any 3D decor or stickers on this one. But even after all that abuse, I didn't have to learn how to book-bind until I'd carried this around with me for about 2 and a half years, so if you need something sturdy that can take some abuse, I recommend this one!

This book served my purposes (art journaling) perfectly. I did use a light layer of gesso to prevent pens and paint from bleeding through. Be aware that gesso will make your pages softer and less crisp. Also, if you use acrylic, the paves will stick together unless you top with wax or some kind of fixative (a problem true of all books, not just this one). Anyway, the page thickness was superb. I love the size/dimensions too. The pages aren't lined or perforated (a plus for me!) and the hardcover is easily customized with a DIY fabric cover if you don't care for plain black. Delivery was lightning fast, absolutely no complaints. I certainly would order again from this company, maybe next time a bigger book with more pages!

She hasn't asked me for any sketch books lately (I think she is getting her own) but I would definitely buy this exact brand again if she were to ask me. I may just buy it again for Christmas or something. Very durable and a nice book for those who like to draw.

I bought this because I was getting so tired of the stupid spiral bound sketch books, because their pages always fell out.

The page thickness works for me, and plus I'm just a beginner when it comes to drawing so whatever works for me, I just wanted something that wouldn't tear out easily and this book is perfect for what I was looking for! I'm hoping to sketch more outside too, and now I won't need a table.

This is a fantastic sketch book that is exactly as described. My only wish, is that the books' pages folded over & around completely. In other words, you have to keep both sides open so you need a large flat desk/table/surface area to draw. I've only used micron pens but no bleeding through pages. I realize they also make spiral bound books but those also have a downside. I am pleased with this product but might look for something a bit more compact if I ever use all 100 pages.

This is exactly what I was looking for, a nice hard cover art book with really good quality paper for a VERY good price. I've been doing art for a long time (about 12 years now) and I've had a lot of previous sketchbooks that I wasn't 100% satisfied with like I am with this one.

Also, I should probably point out that I do draw a lot but that I also use felt tip pens in art a lot as well, and this paper does not bleed or seep through.

Would buy again.
