It's not just a sure-fire formula that's kept the crown atop the queen of romance, as this thriller proves. The gushy love-conquers-all story of South Dakota wildlife biologist Lil Chance and ex-cop/PI Coop Sullivan takes a back seat to the taut, gritty chase of a serial killer. There's never a doubt that Lil and Coop—childhood sweethearts who fall in love, drift apart and then reconnect—will help each other mend their wounded hearts: It was a good day, she thought, when you opened yourself to both the joys and the risks of love, Lil discovers. Nor is it surprising that a crazed killer will meet his match in feisty Lil. But this premier storyteller proves an ordinary love story can still win your heart, and even an inevitable confrontation may scare you silly. (July)

“A thrilling love story.”—Midwest Book Review
“This premier storyteller proves an ordinary love story can still win your heart, and even an inevitable confrontation may scare you silly.”—Publishers Weekly
“Another Roberts masterpiece...Once again, she creates compelling characters and produces a story that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go until the last pages.”—McClatchy-Tribune News Service
“As in previous Roberts novels, well-fleshed-out characters add emotional punch to the action. The juxtaposition of animal and human predators eloquently points out where true viciousness lies. Twin love stories are beautifully woven throughout the gripping suspense. This is one of Roberts' best!”—RT Book Reviews

Many deaths were turning up in the Black Hills. Not discovered until Lil's old boyfriend and old lover, Coop realized that a man had set his sites on Lil and hurting her. While doing what he does best...detective work..he discovered a pattern of death going back twelve years. Now, Lil was in the madman's sights and Coop was not going to let anything happen to her.
Lil didn't understand why anyone would choose her. There are always people upset about refuges, but hers was always the best in care for the animals. None of her animals were ever mistreated.
This was a suspense story that will grab you. Learning about an animal refuge and how it works is fascinating. To hear the stories of how the animals came to be residents are amazing. Add the usual Nora Roberts type romance and you have a book that will keep you turning the pages to the exciting end. A good read.
