I read this book without reading any of the previous series it is no 5 of 6 but it didn't affect it in any way as its a great stand alone book too. Although I will now read the rest of the series in order.
It's about two people that are brought together by chance, she is changing her life after getting a divorce and losing her job, he takes off after getting skin cancer which meant losing part of his ear and being sacked from his modelling career. He goes off into the woods to be a recluse changing his name so no-one has any idea as to who he is. She moves away from where she grew up to start a fresh, a new life with like Rufus and a career change. Rachel wants to be her own boss and takes the plunge into web design. Her mother thinks she's running away, but Rachel had always had a creative side that her mother squashed telling her she needed a job which would pay and keep her feet on the ground, but to Rachel her mother had done enough by pushing her ex husband onto her which resulted in a divorce.
Both Rachel and Rufus are nursing broken hearts, both have suffered a loss of close family members. There are lots of levels to the story and the author does a great job of writing about their feelings and how they deal with each aspect of their emotions and how each of them deal with what life has dealt them. She touches on the deaths of their family and how it's still affecting them without making it to much of the story line.
They meet completely by accident and it is fate that deals most of what happens to everyone in this book and it makes you feel that no matter how low you get you can always turn things around.
I would recommend this book, it delivers hope and makes you want to read more, a beautiful romance.
I would definitely recommend this book, although I think reading the prior book in this series would give the reader a little more insight into other characters mentioned. I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review.
Black Hills Outcast is a beautifully woven story, a story of instant attraction, dealing with loss, second chances and ultimately healing. Debra Salonen cleverly brought out the different reactions towards dealing with grief and loss. There was Rufus who changed his name and identity and disappeared into the woods to live as a recluse, within whom dwelt the heart of an artist. Then there was Rachel who didn't want to look too closely at the issues facing her, navigating through life by the seat of her pants, only dealing with difficulties when she was confronted by them, but who had more courage and stamina than she would have thought. Rosaline dealt with life's curved balls by maintaining rigid order and attempting to bring everyone else into order as well, but was finally confronted with her destructive behaviour and learned to soften and bend. In a family that has had its share of tragedy, I have seen all of these reactions and it makes for complications when put together in the melting pot of grief.
One aspect brought out by Ms Salonen is the importance of HOPE. Rufus' Dreamhouses were a vehicle to generate hope. Without hope, we cannot have faith and we cannot love. It gives impetus to dreams and dreams bring about change.
This book brought a measure of healing into my own life and I would like to thank Ms Salonen for such a thoughtful, and beautifully written book. It touched me deeply.
