I love that Hartness issues these Omnibus additions so that I can feed the need quicker when the story that I don't want to end, does. The world of Jimmy, Greg, Mike, and Detective Law takes a darker turn in this set of books, but that does not make it any less enjoyable. Life is not without it's complications and characters that don't face them just aren't believable. Even if said characters are vampires. Jimmy finds himself in unfamiliar territory facing challenges he didn't even know existed, and finds himself doing so without resources and allies he is used to having at his side.
Hartness does a fantastic job of ensuring the characters grow and change with life events, as people do in real life, and never loses sight of the fact that these characters are fallible and vulnerable. Each choice spirals off to a myriad of other situations that Jimmy handles with his usual aplomb but now a fair share of trepidation.
I can say with absolute certainty that this collection is my favourite of Hartness' work and am eagerly awaiting more and more from Dark Knight Investigations
