This is a story of sufficient length to allow the reader to become engaged in the protracted evolution of, Sydney, the heroine's personal struggle with her willingness to admit the severity of play she desires. There is the usual outcome from fractious behavior from a sub in this lifestyle. However, that is why you are interested in this material. Further intricacies of their professional and Sydney's personal background appear as the story evolves. There is a bit of non-consent and violence but nothing the reader shouldn't expect.
Pace of the narrative, quality of staging the scenes and presentation of dialogue are all first class. In addition to technical craftsmanship Ms. Stone includes a few bits of whimsy. Using a character that became a running gag from The Big Bang Theory, I chuckled, and reference to the nemesis in One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are allowed to sneak in.
Finally, my lack of knowledge on equipment names I will provide what I have discovered so you won't get mentally sidetracked when you come across these names in the story. The Devils Tongue and Dragon Tail, apparently are the same item. Information from an on line vendor indicates that the Devil's Tongue is a flogger producing a great amount of sting. The “feel” is like the feel of a whip on the skin. It doesn’t have the sharp crack of the traditional single tail, but can be made to pop with a lower, deeper pop. It is the most intense toy other than the single tails; i.e.: snake, signals or bull whips. It is most effective using the “towel pop” method. It is more comfortable for the bottom if there is a good warm up period, but some don’t require this attention to detail.
What I love about Measha’s writing is that her characters are so complex and developed. She puts a lot of detail and thought into the motives of the characters and their relationship. It is beautiful to see how Tate helps Sidney admit and accept what she likes. There are wonderful emotional scene’s together and there is also a murder mysterie to solve.
In other words I loved this book.
