Miri and Black go through a lot of stress on their relationship in this novel. The secrecy, the things they have been through already that they are still coping with and the fear of a spy in their midst along with both Black's apparent jealousy and at the same time refusal to have sex with Miri strains their relationship a lot. As seers though, they don't have the option of divorce. In fact, there is so much for them to deal with, I am sure there will be more of this storyline in the next novel and I look forward to more making up.
I had no clue what was coming and what Black was hiding. It came as a complete shock. The climax in this novel rivals movies like "The Sixth Sense". If you love romance, passion and suspense, this book is a must read.
So I went back over my reactions to find out what made this book so different.
Writing style: as good, if not better as all of Ms.Andrijeski's books.
Character developement: from excelent to scary.
Story line: fast paced with surprises and betrayals by the dozen.
Fight scenes: dizzyingly fast and precise.
Love scenes: very slow in coming, but then explosive.
And then I realized what had made me tense. It was all of the above, wrapped into one tight, black package, plus the possibility that all the kept secrets could tear Miri and Black apart.
So Ms. Andrijeski did what only very good writers are able to do, she grabbed me by the throat, dragged me along a rollercoaster of emotions and left me at the end not really satisfied and wanting more to ease the strain.
Sneaky! And well done as always. ;))
This book really was my favorite so far. It starts quick and just doesn't stop. Quentin's plan was rough, but it was pretty impressive when all was revealed. It was pretty tough on his marriage, so I'm interested to see where that goes in the next book. Definitely a recommended read!
