This one starts with the discovery of two bodies. A mother and daughter. They are found in a cave in the Black Mountains outside the town of Cooksville in far North Queensland. Both are naked.
The Black Mountains are a sacred place to the Aboriginals of Austrailia.
Many have died within those mountains which are crisscrossed with caves and tunnels.
Some people went into the mountain and were never seen again. Its a place full of bats, snakes and death. Its a place none of the locals will approach.
The police led by Inspector Peter Martin and Senior Constable Binda Spencer are the first on the scene.
The tour guide who reported the bodies is an Aboriginal named Bobby Gum. Gum has taken folks on this same tour many times and nothing like this has ever happened. All it took was a missing little girl and Bobby finding both her and the bodies in a cave.
Inspector Martin and Spencer locate the bodies, call all the appropriate police and forensics people. They also notify Detective Inspector Maurice Keller who will ultimately be in charge of the case.
The case leads them to Merinda Jerome.
Jerome is a stunningly beautiful woman of mixed Aboriginal and white heritage. She's the widow of a husband who died and who's body has never been found. Jerome is extremely wealthy.
Jerome is a successfull business woman with a lovely home guarded by two trained German Shepherds. She's also a woman who's friends with attorney Yana Gibson.
Gibson is a friend, part time lover and fighting partner of Ben Hood. A Ben Hood who Yana knows will be able to keep Merinda safe.
So begins another great read by Lindsay.
This one has Ben, Merinda, Keller, an attack on Ben, two German Shepherds, a man named Lufton, murder, attempted murder, the Black Mountains, the history of the Aboriginals, a couple of bunkers, sex, death, a flight to an island, a dead man who isn't dead, one twisted crazy killer and Ben Hood involved in a fight for his life and the lives of many others.
Five Stars and then some.
Take an adventure in Australia!! It took me a bit to wrap my head around the dialect, and once I did it made the reading ever so much more exciting. In this one you’ll find intrigue, mystery, fear, revenge, greed, compassion, courage and more that is will keep you on your toes until the end. You will love this title!!
I would strongly recommend that you make your default dictionary the Oxford Dictionary of English. This Australian author uses Australian words and brand names which would make some descriptions muddy to those of us unfamiliar with them. So often authors from other countries seem to feel that they must cleanse their native words and use American words so we will understand the story. I am so glad this author didn't feel the need to take away the flavor of the story's culture and location for it is part of the reason I'm reading it in the first place.
I can't wait to start the third book. My only complain with this mystery series is that they don't have the book number in the title so I know which one to read next. They could have easily been called CORAL SEA AFFAIR (BEN HOOD THRILLER, BOOK 1)followed by BLACK MOUNTAIN AFFAIR(BEN HOOD THRILLER, BOOK 2), etc.
Ben Hood takes on another 'easy' bodyguard gig and ends up fighting for his life. Of course, there are always beautiful women around when Ben Hood shows up, so there's that too. The tie-in to the indiginous population gave the story a really authentic flare, I enjoyed that part of the story a great deal.
This series is shaping up very nicely.
