I live in an apartment, so I have to carefully select the equipment that is most effective to use in terms of functionality, cost and space. I do have an over the door frame pull up bar and after purchasing this I did notice some door frame pull up bars that included a dip add on feature, but ultimately I decided that I was still satisfied with going this route simply because of the weight rating. A door frame can only hold so much weight but this piece of equipment is designed for added weight. I knew doing bench dips would only allow me to add so much weight on top of my legs eventually.
The bad thing about this dip station is the cheap construction. As some other reviewers have mentioned, the feet that stabilize the station are absolutely worthless. They are made of cheap plastic and do not fit flush onto the legs of the station. While screwing in one of the base stabilizer feet, I discovered that one had a screw hole that was already damaged and was impossible to screw on properly. Fortunately, Amazon's excellent customer service was able to grant a partial refund for me and I opted to keep the equipment due to the hassle of returning such a large piece of equipment. I simply lived with the 3 out of 4 screws in one foot stabilizer working and figured the fourth wouldn't impact the performance much which so far it has not.
Overall, I think it is a great product, but needs some better engineering for the design of the stabilizer feet.
In terms of functionality, the bar is pretty good. It doesn't wobble any. The pads where your hands hold your weight up are very comfortable and appear durable (although I haven't had the stand long enough to attest to this). Once assembled, my only complaint is the same as many others that I've seen: the stand would be better if the bars you dip between were closer together. They are pretty wide. I like to keep my hands pretty close to my sides with my elbows tucked when I dip, but I can't do so with the bar. I am a pretty average build (5'10", 160 lbs), so I can see how this would be less than ideal to many people. It doesn't mean that I can't do effective dips or maintain safe form. I just can't perform dips with ideal form as my hands are just too far from my sides.
I debated giving the stand 3 stars instead of 4, but felt that would be inaccurate. It is a very sturdy bar, especially for the price. It could just use some minor tweaking to get the holes to line up perfectly and to bring the bars that support your weight a little closer together. It would be nice if the bar could fold up for storage when not in use, but I couldn't deduct any stars over this as I am unaware of any adequate dip stand that does this.
***UPDADE: I've had the bar for a full year now and have used it pretty regularly. It has not work out one bit, so I can strongly attest to its durability. I still have never used the blocks they provide for bases, and I even took the screws out several months ago and it is still stable. I took them out so I can remove one of the upper bars and fold the rest of the sand on itself so I can store it against a wall in our home.
I have fibromyalgia and moving certain ways can cause pain. Being able to have something to hold onto, to bring myself back up assists me in doing things that I ordinarily could not do and will increase my workout routine. I am 5'7", weigh 203 and this station is all that I need to help support me. It stays flat on the floor, does not slide and is a great height for me.
This could just be a shipping/transportation issue, but my dip stand came heavily damaged. I felt like I got an old/used product right out of the box. If you refer to the pictures below, you'll see that there's a LOT of cosmetic damage to the stand.
Of course, this doesn't affect the performance of the stand. It just makes it unpleasant to look at.
I was also able to the assemble it, but the process wasn't simple or intuitive. The instructions could have been more detailed.
Also, a 10mm wrench isn't included. This isn't bad because it's expected, but you absolutely need a 10mm wrench to tighten the bolts. You cannot do it with your hands.
Lastly, the stand is really wobbly. I'm able to do dips and get a good workout, but I get nervous every time I do a dip.
I would return it, but it's a hassle because the package is huge (I've called Amazon).
If you're okay with a wobbly dip stand that is pretty well made (I really like the foam grips) and relatively cheap, then you should purchase this. But just know that it's not easy to return and you could get a worn out product.
