This is the fourth in the Amanda Steele series by author Carolyn Arnold, and it lives up to all my expectations. This is a gritty mystery with folks who feel like family and friends, a well-disguised mystery, and again taking place in Prince William County in several small towns there, bedroom communities to Washington DC. Amanda is a homicide detective for Prince Williams County Police Department. She and her partner Trent Stenson are investigating the death of a college girl found stabbed several times in the Leesylvania Park on the bank of the Potomac River.

This death has similar quirks in the positioning of the nude carefully cleaned body, the flower placed on the chest, to one about 20 years ago and remembered well by older members of the police force. Amanda desperately needs this to NOT be another serial killer. She has a lot going on in her personal life, including the potential adoption of Zoe Parker, the six-year-old she rescued in a previous tale. Zoe has wormed her way into Amanda's heart and life despite Amanda's resistance to giving anyone else a piece of her after the death of her husband and daughter several years ago. She needs time with Zoe as they work to become a family together.

Then the second girl is found, also stabbed multiple times, cleaned meticulously, and posed nude with a black orchid on her chest. And all bets are off.

So the story is about 2 months after the murders in the previous book. And I very much enjoyed getting to know the little girl Zoe better, and Amanda's partner Trent too.

This was a really interesting plot. The evidence had them looking in first one direction, then in another. It was hard to guess who the villian was. And... I never did! It was a complete surprise. Interesting characters, and fascinating motive for the murders. Plus the cold case. Great twist.

Yeah, don't meet up at 4 a.m. when somebody texts you. It can't possibly be anything good!

I can't wait until the next Amanda Steele book. In the meantime, I'm going to check out other series by the author.

BTW, Ms Arnold... despite the unnecessary expletives, there weren't too many, so thanks for that, at least.

I enjoyed how the characters developed throughout the book. Work and personal relationships added to the story. The complex plot had multiple suspects who were hard to eliminate. Suspenseful! But, as you read, you learn there was bullying going on since high school, rivalry between girls over guys, guys angry because a girl won’t notice him. That leaves Amanda and Trent trying to figure out who, what, why???

‘Black Orchid Girls’ is Book 4 in Carolyn Arnold’s series of police procedurals set in Dumfries, Virginia featuring Detective Amanda Steele. I was new to this author and series but enough background was provided so I didn’t feel lost.

When hikers discover the body of a young woman on the banks of the Potomac River with a black orchid resting on her torso, it is the beginning of a troubling and complex case. It doesn’t take long for Detective Amanda Steele to discover her identity though the motive and reason for the flower remains elusive.

Is there a link to a cold case of twenty years ago where another young woman was murdered and a red rose left on her body? The story has plenty of suspects, red herrings, and the like before all is revealed.

There’s also a side plot linked to Amanda’s personal life that refers back to events in earlier books.

I found ‘Black Orchid Girls’ an engaging crime thriller and following this positive experience I am interested in reading previous books in the series as well as future titles.

I read books 12,3 and 4 back to back. Mistake, as it gets so boring to read the past story again and again. Why cant authors put a,summary of the past books separately? This repeated past history so many times got tedious.
I thought story was flimsy and droned on and on. Skipped who!e pages as so dragged out . Such a disappointment after the past books.
