Instead, put one of these in a well-cooled external case, and you've got a faster, safer, albeit more expensive product (go with their blue series if you wish to save money). You do get what you pay for. These are arguably the very best high-performance, general use Hard Drives out there. And there's quite a lot of hard data to support that.
FWIW, I've already had a controller failure on a MyBook enclosure. Rather than bothering with a warranty exchange, I put the perfectly fine WD Blue drive it contained into an external enclosure. The data was, fortunately, a backup and I didn't need to recover it. The drive was perfectly fine. WD makes great drives and economical enclosures with a huge design flaw in case of needed data recovery because of physical failure - especially the electronics, which in a different enclosure is screw-driver trivial. Buy your external drive components separately in my humble, but experienced, opinion. And for a working drive, internal or external, this series of drives have proven their worth for years and years. Get another series if you're using in a NAS or just for backup. In that case, you'd be wasting money on additional performance. And NAS drives are tweaked a bit differently. These drives, if you care, are also a bit noisy (I actually like to hear a drive at work. So not a problem here.)
I'm personally using at least ten WD hard disks still under warranty in my active work. I've only ever had enclosure failure rather than disk failure from my WD drives. Ever. (Yes, I've been lucky - but another large manufacturer has given me at least two duds.)
I almost bought another 4T instead of this, due to their stellar track record, but I really did need the extra space on a single disk. Hope it holds up as well as my 4Ts always have.
It did not come with any documentation or software and it was not formatted.
If you need to use your warranty, go to the official Western Digital website and you'll find a place to enter the serial number to get help if something goes wrong.
To make it work with Windows 7:
1) Open Control Panel and search for "Format" then click the link under "Administrative Tools". It will launch "Disk Management".
2) On the lower left side you will see "Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2, etc." Right-Click the one for this drive and choose "Convert To GPT Disk".
3) Then Right-Click the right panel to Partition / Format it and you're good to go.
It took me forever to find out I had to right-click the "Disk #" thing.
I used Crystal Disk Mark and got a write speed of 174MB/s compared to 99MB/s over the network. One thing about this also is that it is very spacious. I always prefer to use WD Black drives for our performance needs at work (and also at home).
I would recommend this to anyone needing storage space with great performance.
Read some reviews that these new 6TB drives are a bit faster than the smaller 4TB drives that have been on the market. I will gladly confirm that. I tested the 4TB drive when it was first installed and the 6TB when first installed and I was a bit amazed to see a drive of this size breaking 200mb/sec. Add in the 5 warranty and these are hard to beat.
