The cover of this journal is a beautiful bright red, with a "nubby leather-like" cover (see photos). It's held together with a black band that keeps the journal closed--which I do like a lot, and I have several of these in a smaller size. The size is 8 1/4 by 5 3/4, which is large enough to easily write what I need, but small enough to slip into a computer bag, carry-on, or the rare occasions I use one, a purse. Inside, the pages are crisp white, lined, and on each page is a place to put the date. The pages are also numbered, should you need that reference. There is a "contents page" but I doubt I'll ever be organized enough to use that--however, it would be handy for reference, if say, I wanted to put page numbers there to remember certain notes about my book or anything else. A black ribbon is included to mark the page.
I wrote in it and then rubbed the ink, and there were no smudges--this is important to me, since I'm a messy writer as it is, and a glossy page will cause ink runs--no problem with that here.
Journals can be a little pricey - $22 for this 70 page journal seems a little high, though it is a nice one so you do get what you pay for. Still, I wish there were more pages so this notebook would last longer. But that said, it's slim look is attractive and makes it easy to fit inside other things.
I recommend this for general purpose. If you are a journal-writing person who quickly fills pages with your thoughts/feelings, this may not be for you, as there aren't a lot of pages to write upon. If you need a notebook to write copious amounts of notes, then this may not be for you as 70 pages will go quickly (though you can write front and back). However, if you, like me, just need a nice-looking sturdy notebook for general purposes, then this will certainly fit those needs.
I do like that the notebook opens flat so both sides the page can be written on. The paper is also a quality paper that does not smear the thick tipped pens that I like to use.
This is basically just a notebook with a fancy looking leather-look cover that is easily marred. Mine has a three-inch indent across the front cover that has not gone away and can’t be rubbed out. That is one of the flaws of not seeing something in a store. But honestly, I would have looked at it and wondered why it cost so much and then put it back.
In other words, as far as notebooks are concerned, I get around. By this point, I know what I like, and I know what I don't. This notebook by Mead is genuinely beautiful. I have the red 8" x 5" (roughly) one. It is slim and sleek, but still has a fair number of pages (71 pages front and back = 142 pages total). The cover is hard and protective, but also still very thin. There is a black elastic band that wraps around the front and back covers to keep things tidy and together.
The pages inside are thick and of nice quality. The very first page has a place for you to write your name and contact info. (Does anyone ever actually fill this out?) Then there is another page that has a place to write down the contents of the notebook. The rest of the book is blank lined pages. Page numbers are in the top right corners, and there is a place to write the date in the top left corners. FYI, the notebook doesn't lie completely flat on its own, but it comes close--especially if you really press down on those pages.
The one thing I don't like about this notebook is that it is a bit pushy with the branding. The front cover has "Black n' Red" embossed on it. The first two pages (the ones meant for your contact info and contents section) has the same label. And there is a small red "R" at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE PAGE. It bugs me. It isn't that the Rs are unattractive; I just don't want to be reminded of the brand every time I open the notebook.
Still, I'm not taking off any stars, because I do love the look of the notebook. I only hope that Mead comes out with more colors.
