In this volume, we learn about both Magnus's and Julia's "origins" and thus the reasons for their actions in this 10-issue series. At the end of volume one, Magnus had arrived at a northern city that had been taken over by a priest who wanted to supplant both the Pope and Rome as the seat of Christian power. We soon learn that the priest hopes to use a wondrous relic to convert the pagans from Norway and further motivate/radicalize those under his command.
The resolution of the action in this volume and the series overall happens too quick and neat for my liking. It's entertaining, but I had expected more after finishing volume 1. I'm curious as to how long Brian Wood had planned to write this series. Did he start it with the end in mind? Or did he grow bored or get other projects, so he wrapped it up sooner than expected? I expect the the answer lies within the second question rather than the first.
The pencils and coloring are both well done.
Well-illustrated and interesting, this is worth a look. It all arrives at a satisfactory conclusion and it's recommended to lovers of tales about barbarians or history.
