If stars could be assembled like an old Scorpions human pyramid then this would be the release that deserves it. As has been said, Nightwish talked about it but Within Temptation did it. The Dutch band have here assembled a quality packed release of a double live DVD/CD set that covers so many bases it's really hard to find any fault with it.

DVD 1 is the Black Symphony concert itself. A grand occasion where an entire orchestra was used to back up the band and many of the songs sound even more powerful than on record such is the overall vibe created by the Metropole Orchestra. Vocally things are spiced up further by the inclusion of the Pa'dam choir whose sonorous contribution adds further power to a range of the mellower numbers and really adds to the overall cataclysm in some of the heavier numbers. The innate power of many of the songs is brought into stark contrast by a stage show that includes all the usual suspects in terms of dry ice, flames, pyrotechnics and the like but also includes guest spots and what was reputedly the largest video screen ever used in Europe up to that point which uses slices of specially created footage and excerpts of relevant video clips to drive home the message. All up while the relentless emotion drenched nature of the tunes may exhaust some viewers and while the constant assault of Sharon Den Adels' very piercing vocals may fatigue some ears it is hard to find fault with this spectacular performance. As if that wasn't enough there is also a documentary about the making of this special event and some other snippets.

Haven't felt this way since REM released Lifes Rich Pageant-can't stop playing it. Haven't felt this way since I first heard Miles Davis' Kind of Blue-there's nothing left to say. This is one of the few performances that deserve notice from lovers of any style of music. Yes, it's Gothic flavored, it's poppy, it's orchestral. This is top shelf material.

The item listed is not in the format described, it was actually PAL and not NTSC; the box was damaged. The plastic that holds the CDs was cracked and broken in some parts. In the end I decided to keep it regardless, all the cd played well without skips and its also a really hard DVD to find.
