For those who have the new Blackberry Playbook, this is a welcome and inexpensive book that goes deeper than any manual.

The book is compact with very high quality, full color pictures on glossy paper. Included are nearly 300 pages of interesting and useful techniques for using the PlayBook to its fullest.

The 15 chapters cover:
1. What is a Blackberry PlayBook?
2. How do I set up and customize my PlayBook?
3. How do I navigate my PlayBook?
4. How do I surf the web on my PlayBook?
5. How do I bridge the PlayBook with my BlackBerry smart phone?
6. How can I read and use e-mail on my PlayBook?
7. How can I hone my organizational skills on my PlayBook?
8. How can I create, edit, and view Office files on my PlayBook?
9. How do I enjoy music and video on my PlayBook?
10. How can I view, share, and capture pictures on my PlayBook?
11. What apps do I have and how can I get more?
12. How can I read eBooks on my PlayBook?
13. How do I keep my PlayBook secure?
14. How do I manage settings on my PlayBook?
15. How do I manage my PlayBook with BlackBerry desktop software?
16. How do I troubleshoot my PlayBook?

Overall it's well written, is in an easy layout, with several sub-headings under each chapter. This is an indispensable resource for those purchasing the new PlayBook. Whether you are new to this or similar mobile devices, or an expert looking for a little more, this book has plenty of content to cover you. Highly recommended!

Undoubtedly a great book when it was written. The latest update of the Play Book operating system has left many parts of this book out of date and a number of the explanations are no longer relevant. It was well written and contains many great explanations but I would not recommend this or any other Play Book reference unless they have been updated to reflect the latest OS Revision. In their defense I do not believe anyone could have anticipated all the OS changes. In comparing this book with the revised OS it is easy to see why the Play Books were not widely accepted when introduced. Many of the features under the original OS were dependent on having a Blackberry Phone. Under the new OS the cord has been cut and this fine tablet can exist very well on it's own.

First off, it's incredible how quickly they come out with these books for new products.

This is written in a much more helpful and overall less cut and dry manner than any Blackberry manual. Provides a basic overview of the different functions of the Playbook without getting too technical. I recommend it if you're planning on purchasing one. I used it for about a month. It's on my bookshelf now and I don't really have any more need for it, but it definitely gets you through that "getting used to this new thing that you have no idea how to use" stage.

I like this book. In fact, I like this book more than the idea of buying a Playbook, itself.

There are two things to consider when deciding on purchasing this book. The first is, if you have access to a Blackberry Playbook tablet, do you know all of the features or hidden features as it would be? And, two, if you're on the fence about buying a Playbook, this book would be, in my opinion, equal to or better than talking with someone who actually owns a Playbook because there's a better-than-average chance that they don't know all of the functionality that the Playbook offers.

*** ****
I've had a Blackberry for 7 years and aside from the obvious drawbacks of the Playbook doesn't have an independent access to the BB messenger service--which is the foundation feature of the BB, after all-- and having a relative closed OS means such creature comfort capabilities that you'd have with the iPad or an Android tablet is a consequence of poor corporate decision-making.

All this notwithstanding, THE COMPANION makes a very compelling case to consider the BB Playbook if you're on the fence about purchasing.

The layout of the book makes for easy reading. Quick reference and high-resolution photos and diagrams makes finding those lesser-known features a breeze.

Of the interesting features found in the Playbook these three chapters are of particular importance:

Ch. 6. How Can I Read and Use Email on My Playbook (pp's 89-100)
Ch. 7. How Can I Hone My Organizational Skills Using My Playbook (pp's 101-120)
Ch. 8. How Can I Create, Edit and View Office Files On My Playbook (pp's 121-144)

*** To Buy Or Not To Buy (THE COMPANION)?

Now that the Blackberry Playbook's price has been dramatically reduced to meet the competition, I have been tempted to buy it. For about the same price as the Amazon Kindle Fire, the Blackberry's hardware specs are much better. But I am also concerned about what the Blackberry platform can offer, because it is the software, or apps, that make the hardware useful. This is where the Blackberry Playbook Companion book is useful. I read the book from cover to cover so I was able to know its capabilities and limitations before deciding whether to make the purchase.

The book is printed in full color and spans about 300 pages. In its 16 chapters, it describes the Playbook hardware and the operating system, setup and customization, navigation, surfing the Web, "Bridging" the Playbook with a Blackberry smartphone, reading email through the Bridge and through the Internet browser, using calendar/contacts/appointments/tasks/memos/notes, create/edit/view Office files, enjoying music and video, view/share/capture pictures, managing apps, reading eBooks, keeping the Playbook secure, managing settings, using Blackberry Desktop, and troubleshooting.

You will learn that the Playbook is quite powerful, especially when used together with a Blackberry phone. It was not designed to be a general purpose tablet, but rather more appropriate for use in a corporate environment where communication security is paramount. The variety of apps available so far cannot rival that of Apple iOS or Google Android, but this may or may not be important, depending on your particular applications.

This book will give both the Playbook owner and any potential purchaser a good understanding of its hardware, operating system, and capabilities.
