So when the DR650GW-2CH came out promising to fix the overheating, and adding a rear view camera, I decided to give it a try and install it in a new car I just bought.
I spent about an hour hooking up the PowerMagic and routing the cables so they're not visible. After that it was time to setup the camera. I installed the latest BlackVue Viewer (version 1.31) on my Mac, removed the microSD card from the dashcam, and setup the network from within BlackVue Viewer.
With the new WiFi settings I could not get a reliable connection to the dashcam using the iPhone app. The dashcam could boot-up and start recording just fine. As soon as I turned the WiFi on the dashcam, the dashcam completely froze. The iPhone would see the WiFi network, but either not connect to it, or it would connect but not obtain an IP address. I noticed the LED indicating the recording is on was frozen instead of blinking. For all practical purposes the dashcam was completely frozen. I tried multiple variations of booting up, none of them seemed to help. This happened with the latest firmware version available at this time (1.007) and latest iPhone app (1.520).
I only managed to connect the iPhone to the dashcam over WiFi twice. During this time I did notice the angle of view of the new camera is much smaller than the one on the older DR500GW-HD cameras. Not cool! I loved the very wide angle of the old cameras, they capture a lot of what's happening on the sides of the car. Why limit the angle in the new cameras?
I wasted 4 hours trying to get the new camera to work. I was really disappointed by the results and decided to return the system. I'll try to get the older DR500GW-HD, which incidentally is no longer listed on BlackVue's web site.
My main issue is video quality. My Garmin can read license plates perfectly but this unit hs problems with that unless you are inches from another car. Software is up to date and resolution is at the highest setting.
Now on to the motion detection. You might as well turn it off. Otherwise your camera will record constantly in parking mode. There is a sensitivity setting from 1-100 and no matter what setting it is on, it will constantly say it detects motion and record all night long.
The other annoying problem is that the cloud disconnects and reconnects constantly. This results in constant push notifications to my phone. There is no reason to lose connection to the hotspot because it is very close to the camera and gets a strong, uninterrupted 4G LTE signal. Cloud streaming is slow at best and even if a video fails to load, you are marked as having viewed it. Did I mention that you can only view so many videos over the cloud before you are blocked for the month?
Another connectivity issue is the wifi. Unless i am sitting in the car, I cannot connect and/or stay connected to its wifi. Removing the card and veiwing videos on your computer is not convenient, but is the best method for this unit.
Although I dislike all of the details mentioned above, the camera itself has features that aren't available elsewhere. And even though these features don't necessarily work perfectly, I'm hoping with reviews like this, the manufacturer will take notice and implement updates or perhaps their next model will be superior.

How I came to pick the BlackVue:
I had been doing research on dashboard cameras for about 4 months prior to my purchase. The BlackVue had the best reviews overall, and the footage quality from the YouTube videos I watched from this particular brand's videos seemed very clear. I was lucky enough to have a friend who had the previous generation of BlackVue (the DR550) and he showed me his cameras, his set up, and the footage he had gotten off of it.
Some Features:
The DR650 has a 1080p front and 720p rear camera with about 130 degree views, so that was a plus for my car, I catch pretty much anything in front or rear of my car on camera. It is so simple to use, you plug it in and it does everything else for you. The wiring comes with tips on how to wire your car, which I have yet to do. The box came with everything you need to get started, microSD card, the cables, the hardware to mount the units and wires. The app you can download for free works pretty well, I like to use it to make sure I have set up the camera to view everything. The interface is pretty simple, no downloading involved. The application is stored on the microSD card, so you can pretty much review the footage anywhere. Another perk is the GPS, you can display your speed and location (or not) I opt not to display my speed, not because I'm doing anything wrong, but because I don't really feel it necessary. The data is stored on the card, so if you need it in the future, it's there. The location feature is pretty neat, you can see where you were driving when particular bits of footage need to be identified. The settings are also really easy to change (ie what you want an audio alert about, what time you want to display-like time zones, speed in KPH/MPH, which LEDs you want to light up). You can select the length of the clips, I opted for 1 minute clips, for ease with finding the clips I want, and discarding the ones I don't. It also has wifi, that you can turn on or off, which cannot be used to connect to the internet, but makes it easy to connect your phone/table to your BlackVue to the app. The voice recording is on by default, and with a quick swipe of your finger, you can disable this function.
My selection process:
With the company selected, I looked into their products. The X00 series are only the front cameras, and I wanted both front and rear, so the 500, 600, and 700 were out. Of the 550, 650, and 750, I narrowed it down to the 550 or 650, since the 750 has an integrated screen which made it too bulky for my taste. From the remaining two the 650 was the obvious choice. The prices I found on Amazon were comparable to some of the online vendors, and the fact that the 650 has the capability to upgrade to a 64GB microSD card was the deciding factor.
Some Tips I found useful:
1) If upgrading your memory, use a class 10 or better MicroSD card. You simply replace the microSD card that came with your blackvue, start it up, then hold the button (wifi-button) and it will reconfigure the card, no downloading involved.
2) Use the microSD card to usb adapter to access the card. Change your settings as soon as possible to fit your needs. I disabled GPS display (which disabled speed display on footage), changed the lights, to be less obvious, and disabled the audio notifications (my personal preference). But they are easy to play around with. Reviewing footage can be done from your computer or the app, and it's pretty easy.
3) I mounted the front unit behind my rearview mirror, out of sight for the most part. It's where I kept my radar detector. Unfortunately this took the space of my radar detector, so now I need to find a new place for that. I tried mounting the radar detector under the blackvue, but it gets in the footage. My car is a smaller, semi sporty car, so if it fits for me, you shouldn't have a problem finding a place for it (unless you have a SUPERCAR, in which case it might be a little harder, but probably pretty easy-I don't personally know anybody with a Lambo or Ferrari, so I haven't had a chance to try).
4) If you have contact with a police officer, about an accident you were involved in or witnessed, I don't believe (don't hold me to this) you are under any obligation to let them know you have it (Washington State, USA). If you have a clear shot that is useable, I would submit it to the police department as soon as possible. Since we aren't required to have a dash cam, and it's fairly rare (around here at least) most officers won't even think to ask (from my experience). But I think it's useful to have, especially in a "he said she said" type situation, where you can clearly identify the person at fault. I personally have seen so many accidents as of late, that I thought I'd capture some interesting footage, hopefully NOT involving me.
