In this second installment, Matthews takes us not only on a wild race against time to save a beloved hero, but also on a poignant journey through forgiveness and healing. Mercy and Victor are a couple to fall in love with. They are both strong, honorable and long-suffering, and even though they have every reason to hate and hurt one another, they find their hearts doing otherwise.
I don't want to detail the plot, as I feel enough is revealed in the blurb. Just know that this story packs an emotional wallop that rivals the twists and turns of the exciting plot.
Adventure. Intrigue. Suspense. Romance. It's all there in this wonderful ride.
This is the story of Victor and Mercy, but for some unknown reason, Matthews chose to link her characters and some of the plot very tightly to the previous book in the series, Devil’s Cove. I think this would have been a stronger story, less distracting, if Eveline and Dominick had remained as tertiary characters. Their presence added little oomph to anything related to the main plot of this book. However, the frequent mention of "the other drama" related to them will distract you if you haven't read it.
At first this novel feels like a standard Victorian Gothic, but then the paranormal aspects creep their way into the plot. Mercy is a talented witch and Victor is living with a curse that promises to end his existence at age 27. And then there are ghosts and creatures and demons. I tend to prefer a more streamlined approach, but perhaps this aspect will introduce paranormal readers to the glory of a good Gothic suspense.
With the aid of various witchy brews, the relationship between Victor and Mercy runs hot and cold. Intentionally. It adds to the suspense, but also means that the moments that move their relationship forward feel disingenuous. It is gives a sense of doom to their relationship, which is quite fitting for a Gothic novel.
Overall, I had a somewhat uneven reaction to this novel because I felt it was paced unevenly and overburdened at times with extraneous characters and paranormal cacophony. Other times I was totally absorbed and rooting for the love of the leads. Victor is a tortured soul and a clueless man. Mercy's name was a barometer to the book. Sometimes it was there (and I liked her) and then it wasn't (and I hated her.) I was a jumbled up, mixed up mess, and I have the sneaking suspicion that is exactly where R.C. Matthews wanted me to be.
3.5 rounded to 4 stars.

Victor Blackburn has a family curse which will cause him to die horrifically on his 27th birthday. The only way to save himself is to find Mercy Limmerick, a witch who can reverse the curse. The problem? Victor was forced to kill her mother.
Mercy waits anxiously for the day Victor will die and with him, the last of the Blackburns. She doesn't expect to fall for the man, however, or become embroiled in the history of the curse. Will she save him? Or will their past threaten the chance for a future?
I was really looking forward to the gothic atmosphere in this one. And it delivered! Victor's family home is mysterious and dark, and it was a game of Clue trying to figure out the workings of the curse. They have to find amber stones to set Victor free, but other twists and turns come about. The second half of this book was exciting and always kept me guessing.
Victor is a former pirate and his past is so sad! He's determined to break the curse, and he has such a formidable will that he ends up stealing Mercy away. With the help of love potions and serums, his fate becomes complicated as his morals are tested. Mercy has such a good head on her shoulders as well. She's intelligent and crafty, but slowly, she gets to know the man beneath the curse.
Anyone looking for a good paranormal tale should definitely give this one a try.
The sexy pirate, Victor Blackburn, is almost the age when all the first-born son's of his family die... ever since Elizabeth Thorne cursed them as punishment for his ancestor, Ambrose Blackburn, betrayal of her. He's desperate to find the one woman, a descendant of Elizabeth, who can save him.
Mercy Seymour is that woman. Unfortunately for Victor, she hates him. But time is running out. Can Victor convince Mercy to forgive him of the past and help him live to see the future by breaking the curse that's been between their families for generations?
Mercy may have hated Victor Blackburn all her life, but without realizing who he is, she finds the sexy pirate's charms are irresistible. Likewise without knowing she's the very woman he's been searching for, Victor is completely enamored with the tavern keeper's niece. These two are written with undeniable chemistry, but they fight it and each other for much of the story... which only makes the book so much more interesting! I hated having to put it down. 5 stars.
