Editorial Reviews

For decades, ex-government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader, TV’s “The Office,” “Boston Legal”) has been one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as “The concierge of Crime.” Now, he’s mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: he will help catch the world’s most elusive criminals, under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone, TV’s “Law & Order: Los Angeles”), an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico. For Liz, it’s going to be one hell of a first day on the job.

In my opinion most pilots are an episode you wade through understanding that the true series will,in most cases, look nothing like the pilot because the writers are still in a creative chaos mode, hoping for a green light from the studio.
The Black List was a very different experience. This pilot was interesting and entertaining. Every scene was well planned and had the look of $$ confidence behind it. Also the character/plot development is engaging and leaves the viewer with an "ok - you have opened the door to secrets now I am hooked" feeling. And finally - James Spader - well what a great choice for the wonderfully wicked Reddington!
I look forward to Monday nights and am pleased the networks (NBC in this case) have scored one over cable.

"The Blacklist" is a riveting program. I am currently watching Episode 8. Another reviewer complained about special effects...personally, I am there because of James Spader. I could care less about how the bullets shatter the windshield. James Spader is a tremendously nuanced and wonderfully emotive actor. The shows are incredibly well written and viscerally engaging. I am hopeful the price will be lowered but that has more to do with personal finance than with the worth of the program. I don't watch much network TV. Most of it is immature and leans too heavily on bodily functions for humor and bed hopping for drama. James Spader, whether as Allen Shore or Raymond "Red" Reddington, is simply, sublimely delicious. If you have not seen this program, do yourself a favor and give it a try...just enjoy James Spader and try to ignore the young male FBI agent that travels with Lizzie. He needs to spend less time trying to be a hard on and more time watching Spader--maybe he might learn to act a bit better.

James Spader really shines in this action packed thriller. The stories so far have been intricate without ever quite letting you know if he will be the hero or the villain.

Here's hoping the season continues to flirt with the line between good and evil.

Without doubt, James Spader will make this show. His portrayal of the seedy, yet brilliantly intelligent Reddington, leaves me wanting more. Reddington knows what he wants and how to get it, using the FBI all the way. As he puts it in ep. 2: "The FBI works for me now." He keeps them on their toes, and even then they can't keep up as he maneuvers his way to shutting down the criminals he hates, letting the ones he likes go, and still managing to make you feel like he's at least working with and for the good guys, even if he's no saint himself. No one trusts him - yet - but they have no choice to play his game, even as Agent Keen tries to figure out how he knows so much about her. I'm sure the mysteries will be revealed slowly enough to keep everyone coming back.

This show had me hooked after the first episode, and the second one didn't disappoint. I look forward to a long run of interesting stories. The interaction between the lead characters played by James Spader and Megan Boone is fascinating, reminiscent of Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster in Silence of The Lambs. (But in no way is this a gruesome story like that one was.) The show has action, excellent dialogue and conversations, and secrets to be revealed - all done in a high quality way. It is, as many shows, implausible, but that just doesn't matter in a good show like this. It's a new Homeland but one that I think will be able to keep up the interest of its viewers for a number of seasons.

My husband and I really enjoyed Blacklist and watched the second episode on television Mon. night. We appreciate programs that are not filled with profanity and move so fast you can't keep up with what is happening. We love programs that are twisting and fun. The show was recommend by my beautician and I called a friend to spread the word about Blacklist.

The new top tv series on tv is well worth watching. The main reason that I enjoy this is of course james spader. Now in his fifties he lends his vast experience in acting and character development to make his character very interesting and intriguing. His character , who is now more dangerous and such than he was a young man is a senior citizen that really demands attention and respect. James spader himself was once a pretty boy actor who had the talent to be far more than his looks and he often proved it. These days his a veteran older actor whose presence adds class to a show. The show is about a international criminal who is using the fbi to get rid of some real scum. He's not a good man but he's better than the filth he's getting rid of. And of course we don't know if the lead female character is his daughter. He denies this to her face in one episode. Is he lying? I will keep tuning in to find out for sure.
