The elegant design of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera packs an incredible number of high end digital film features into a miniaturized, handheld design. Made from lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite, the camera features a multifunction handgrip with all controls for recording, ISO, WB and shutter angle right at their fingertips. Because it's an advanced digital film camera, the sensor is designed to reduce thermal noise allowing cleaner shadows and higher ISO. Plus the large 5 inch LCD makes it possible to get perfect focus at 4K and 6K resolutions. Featuring a larger 6144 x 3456 Super 35 sensor and EF lens mount, the BlackmagicPocket Cinema Camera 6K lets customers use larger EF photographic lenses to create cinematic images with shallower depth of field, allowing creative defocussed backgrounds and gorgeous bokeh effects. This means that customers canshoot in 6K and then in post production zoom and re-frame to allow wide shots and close ups to be created, all from a single camera and without losing image quality. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K both have an incredible 13 stops of dynamic range which means they preserve more detail in the lightest and darkest areas of an image than simple video cameras can. This allows customers to set exposure for an indoor scene such as a cafe and still retain the details of bright outdoor light coming through a window. Customers even get more colors than the standard DCI-P3 colorspace used fo

The picture quality that comes from this is far superior to anything else available at this price. If you are looking to up your game in videography, and autofocus isn’t a requirement then this is the camera for you. You won’t get a better picture for the price.
If you get this camera you’re definitely going to have to address the battery. The battery it comes with lasts 20 minutes and will just die without warning. So I got battery plate that accepts NP batteries and has a bmpcc6k power plug (I got one from Fotga, $45, that came with the power cable built in and one from smallrig ,$14, that required me to by an a/c to bmpcc6k power cable, $25-$30). I can run the camera off NP970 batteries and get almost 2 hours of shooting on one battery. There are other options to power these, but I found this to be the cheapest and lightest option over some of the bigger batteries. These batteries can be mounted on top of the camera, on a rig or on a gimbal and not get in the way. The factory batteries mainly allow to keep the camera on and running while still being able to swap np batteries (or whatever styler you go with) if they happen to die in the middle of a long shoot.
The screen on this camera is nice. The touch screen is responsive and is plenty bright in most situations. I’ve found direct sunlight makes it difficult to see so I purchased a sun hood that gives some shade to the monitor which’s makes it easier to see. I also bought a Feelworld 279 2200nit Camera monitor that’s made for direct sunlight. That way I can still pull my focus when the camera is on a gimbal or shoulder rig.
The focus peaking works well. I didn’t realize until I had used the camera a few months there are 3 setting for the focus peaking. I only ever used it how it comes from the factory which is the medium setting. It worked well, but changing to the high setting really made it easy to find my focus.
It also has false color which comes in nice to get the right exposure on your shots. Turn it on and adjust the exposure settings to get the subjects skin to be light gray or pink and your exposure is right on.
The auto white balance this camera has also makes it very easy to get your white balance right. Just pull up the white balance setting, touch auto white balance and have something white in the frame and it will adjust the white balance accordingly. It works well and is really accurate.
You will want to make sure you have some good SSD drives or cards to record to. A lot of even “fast” SD cards wouldn’t work in this camera so I opted to just use SSD drives. The Samsung T5 was a great option but it has been discontinued as of September 2020. So I have since started using SanDisk Extreme SSD and have had great success. You can record to the SanDisk SSD in 3 to 1 compression and 60fps and will have no issues.
This camera also has dual iso. If you come from a DSLR your used to trying to set your iso as low as possible, shooting for 100. This camera is different and the lowest isn’t always the best. The native or best iso setting on these cameras are 400iso and 3200iso. That means at 400 or 3200 you’re going to get the most clear image the camera can give. So if you have the iso at 1000 it will get a worse picture than at 1250 because 1250 enacts the 3200 native iso on this camera. Or if your iso is set to 100 the image quality will be worse than at 400. This took me a while to catch onto but makes a higher difference in image quality the camera gets.
The audio options on this camera are also nice. It records out if the camera in stereo but it’s very very quiet. There is a 3.5mm jack you can use to plug in a mic as well. This gives ok sound but depending on your mic your results will vary. The mini xlr is really nice though. It provides phantom power so you can use all kinds of different mics that require that. When using the mini xlr port with just a basic mic that did not need phantom power the sound was much more clean and crisp than with the 3.5mm jack. Having the mini xlr also lets me plug my church’s sound board directly into the camera to I have the audio sound super high quality. And it saves me a step of syncing it in post.
As I mentioned this camera does not have a continuous autofocus. I had been using Canon and Sony cameras for all my video work and was used to letting the a/f do the work. I hesitated at getting the bmpcc6k because I wanted to keep a/f, but in the end having total manual focus makes anything you film with this camera more professional. You’re in total control of the focus the entire time so you don’t get the hunting back and fourth with the a/f that sometimes ruined shots.
And an added bonus. You get DaVinci resolve for FREE.
Overall I am 100% happy with my purchase. I actually own 2 of the 4k and 1 6k model. I’ll never go back to DSLR.
