UPDATE: It's been just over a year and a half since I purchased and installed this dashcam. I still love it, and it still works great. I've had it restart a handful of times at random, but an SD Card format every month or so prevents it from happening. I think the SD Card gets full and causes this. Still 100% satisfied for the money I paid!
UPDATE: It's been two years and still going strong! Have found that freezing weather under 10 degrees F or less seems to trigger the random SD Card issues from time to time that require the quick format. Otherwise, working well!
Things I like about this unit:
- Extremely inexpensive for a dual camera setup
- Has GPS (this may bother some, *those who speed, ahem*. But I prefer it)
- Comes with everything one should need to mount and get recording immediately
- Great video quality at the front, and decent enough at the rear
Problems I ran into:
- The cord running back to the rear camera is long, but not quite long enough to route through my A4 like I wanted it. Luckily, it's Mini USB, so I just ordered a 6 foot extension here on Amazon. Works like a charm.
- Shock sensor can be pretty sensitive. Our roads aren't in the greatest condition, and they're always setting off the Event recording.
- Rear camera sticky tape didn't hold up in heat. Fell off a couple times now, and I'm just going to use rear view mirror adhesive one of these days. That'll show it.
Honestly, I love having this. I was almost in an accident a few weekends ago, where I just ever so gracefully dodged some jerk that ran a stop sign in front of me as I was doing 60 mph (highway with cross traffic). I didn't even have to push the emergency button, something set it off, even though there was no impact. Must have been the quick shift to the right or possibly my girlfriend screaming at the window. All I know is, I got a good solid recording and saved it for lulz.
I'm sure my next one will be a BlackVue, but this is a wonderful unit for starting out.
The software is a hassle though. The video playback works fine for both front and rear cameras. The biggest problem is that the GPS function is broken (see attached image in the lower righthand corner). The software has built-in screenshot functionality, which is nice, but it doesn't allow for exporting clips.
Also, the camera only keeps an hour of "normal" playback in a loop. It has extra storage for "events", etc. It would be really nice to have the option to extend the recording loop time. Maybe it automatically increases with the size of the SD card (I'm using the included 16GB one). If I have the chance to try it and the loop time gets larger, I'll update this review.
Rear camera will, at times, have a distinct blue cast to the video but the next time the car is used color will be normal.
I would be better if the orientation were horizontal versus vertical - installation would be more discrete.
Camera pre-allocates about 20% of the total memory card capacity for use as 'event' files which reduces the usable capacity of the card. Example: a 32GB card will end up with about 25GB for normal recording.
None of the above are 'deal killers' and for the price you won't find any other dual channel with comparable quality.
