This was a great novel, and my first from this author. While I had somewhat expected it to be more romantic in genre, it was very clearly an excellent modern fantasy with well thought-out systems for magic, a fun plot, and interesting characters. (Don't worry romance readers, there is a romantic element. And don't you worry either, fantasy readers, the romance isn't over-the-top.) The author does not, however, go into too much technical detail as some high-fantasy novels might, yet still shows that she put a good deal of thought into the magic system within her world. Some fantasy novels struggle with too many character viewpoints, as alternate characters come across as weak, but Blackthorne had interesting characters, backstories for each, and character development throughout. All of the primary characters grow, change, or improve in meaningful and insightful ways, and as a reader this is the most important aspect of any novel. So, why not a full five stars? To be honest, the only thing lacking about the story to me was the ending. It was not bad or poorly written in any way, mind you, I simply expected a little more "oomph" in the final character wrapup. That said, it does leave the end of the story slightly open-ended, so if the author is planning to write a sequel (I hope), then her ending is a great setup. I'm looking forward to reading more books by her!
