"A dark story of passion and revenge ... A guilty-pleasure read that kept me captivated knowing something sinister is looming in the plot and over the characters. If you have a new year resolution to read more books, this is a great one..."
--New Orleans Magazine
"... the narrative is crisp and has a contemporary ease to it for a flawless reading. The vivid characters are one of the main strengths of this story, other than the fascinating premise and well-paced plot. As for its supernatural element, New Orleans is always a good choice and I'm glad that it's one of the settings in Blackwell. It is a provoking yet absorbing read about the dark, twisted and dangerous part of the human psyche. ...this is a solid debut for the series from Weis and Astor. I'm curious to see how the story continues." ~Readers' Favorite
"The first word I can think of is WOW ... definitely different from most of the books I read, which is why I wasn't sure it was my cup of tea, but it was my cup of tea and my cup of coffee, it filled all the things I would want from a book ... I can't wait for more."

I loved it from the first page. Blackwell has all the elements that tripped my trigger: sex, love, betrayal, passion, a curse that yields a supernatural outcome. It blends the corporeal with the supernatural in a way that is credible and frightening. The course of friendship takes on new and dark tones as the story takes them to New Orleans. Jealousy, vengeance and revenge dot the landscape of the writing all the way to the surprise ending that takes place once back in Boston.
This is not like any other book I have read to date. The handsome, wealthy Magnus Blackwell and his impoverished, adopted friend Jacob are deftly juxtaposed in style and character, well developed and credible.
Don't miss out on this! It is fast paced and compelling.
Magnus Blackwell appears at first to be a young man that any would want as their friend. He's rotting inside and soon that rot manifests itself when he retreats to the world of voodoo. When Magnus acquires a cane with dragon eyes the truth of what he is is revealed and the one man he declared as friend, Jacob O'Connor, pays for Magnus' betrayal with heartache and bitterness.
The story is rich in cultural settings set in the late 1800s, with factual places in Victorian society along with real-life elements of voodoo and the supernatural. There’s quite a bit of suspense and naughty scenes that will get your heart pounding. Something for everyone - but not for kids.
Two men, once the best of friends, now the deepest of adversaries. They are from completely different worlds, one born of refinement and the other in abject poverty; fighting over the attention of a captivating woman. The story builds to a sinister, gripping and dark climax that will make you sweat.
Impossible to put down and a definite page-turner. Lots of twists, turns and surprises and an ending I did not see coming. This is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars
The story Blackwell: A Magnus Blackwell Novel by Alexandrea Weis and Lucas Astor is a gothic romance book. In the late 1800’s handsome, wealthy Magnus Blackwell is the envy of all. Magnus meets Jacob O’Conner, who is a Harvard student from the working class. An unlikely friendship is struck. That close bond soon becomes challenged by a woman whom Magnus wants, but Jacob gets. Devastated, Magnus travels to New Orleans. He has a chance meeting with Oscar Wilde, becomes immersed in a world of depravity and brutality, and even becomes the inspiration for Dorian Gray. Now, with the help of voodoo, Magnus is set upon winning back the woman Jacob stole. Two men, both bent on revenge, will lay the foundation for a curse that will forever alter their destinies.
When I first read the description of this book, I wasn’t sure what to think. I do however love stories about New Orleans and the voodoo that is practiced there. I also loved the character Dorian Gray, so I started reading. This is one of the most disturbing stories I have read in a while. That is not a bad thing, it just means that the author truly wrote a story that will take you on a wild ride. Make sure that you hold on with both hands as I’m not sure where you will land if you don’t. It is very sad to see what jealousy and hate can do to two people. The character I feel the most for is Jacob. He is so happy when he gets married and never once thinks that his friend would betray or plot against him. This story takes you down a dark path of betrayal, murder, and revenge. There are scenes of violence and adult content. I would recommend for a mature audience.
