About this item

- PENCILS WITH HERITAGE – First created in the 1930’s, Blackwing built a cult following that included John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones, who proudly used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and many other Looney Tunes characters. Discontinued in the 90’s, devotees paid as much as $40 a pencil. In 2010, we revived the Blackwing brand for a new generation of writers, musicians, and others seeking a more natural existence.
- PERFECT FOR WRITERS AND EVERYDAY USE – With our firm and smooth Japanese graphite core, Blackwing 602 pencils are perfect for writers, musicians, and everyday users. Use when you want a steady, clear line without excessive sharpening.
- UNIQUE ICONIC DESIGN – Blackwing’s unique and iconic rectangular erasers are synonymous with quality. Each of our pencils features a specially designed ferrule, allowing you to extend or replace the eraser.
- COMMITMENT TO QUALITY – Blackwing 602 pencils are made with the finest materials in the world, including Genuine Incense-cedar from California and premium Japanese graphite.
- HOW WE GIVE BACK – A portion of the sales from all Blackwing products benefit the Blackwing Foundation, which funds and develops arts and music education at the K-12 level. Your purchase helps provide, among other things, the instruction, learning environment and instruments children need to participate in the Little Kids’ Rock Modern Band Program.

Pencils with a Story
Blackwing pencils were originally introduced by the Eberhard Faber Company in the 1930s. Their cult following included John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones, who proudly used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and many other Looney Tunes characters.
Despite this following, they fell victim to cost-cutting measures of the 1990s and were discontinued. But, that didn’t stop devotees from paying as much as 40 dollars per pencil to seize unused stock. In 2010, our company drew from the nearly century of experience in the pencil business to access the best materials in the world and bring Blackwing back for a new generation of writers, musicians, and others seeking a more natural existence.
Today, a portion of every Blackwing sale benefits music and arts education at the K-12 level.

I use both the Hi Uni and Blackwings for my drawings. I started drawing with the Blackings, and use the 602 as a 2B, Pearl - 3B and Blackwing - 4B. Later, I bought and used the Hi Uni's 2H, HB, 6B, and 10B. (I only recently became aware of the Palomino Mixed grade pencils, which I would like to try some time) If I must use only one pencil for a sketch or drawing then I would likely choose the 602. If I'm given a choice of 2 it would be the 602 and the Blackwing. Note: I find that the Pearl is very close in blackness to the 602 and I have a hard time discerning the difference.
In the attached image, I used all three Blackwings: 602, Pearl, and Blackwing.
I must give props to the seller, Palomino. When I received my shipment, there were 2 pencils where the eraser ferrell was glued to the eraser bracket making the removal of the eraser nearly impossible. They responded immediately to my concern and promptly sent me replacements + 2 more for good measure. Now that's great service and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Palomino.

All I can say is that mark making does seem to be a lot smoother than a yellow Ticonderoga No. 2... or for that matter, better than my graded artist pencils. I enjoy using this pencil as a sketching tool, as well as to lay down the construction lines prior to painting in watercolor. Sketched lightly, the lines seem to dissolve away and be relatively invisible after laying down a wash of color. With a little extra pressure, I can draw so that the lines show up with the painting if I choose. That's pretty good flexibility that I appreciate. As a working artist, I tend to be a bit of a "tool junky"... I'm always interested in finding something better than what I'm currently using. I'm also in constant search of a way to do more with less, to carry fewer tools, and to only have tools that are excellent. This simple (expensive) pencil is a constant companion with my sketchbook, water brush, and paint kit.

It’s a great sketching pencil and has the ability to draw lightly (like an H or HB) yet produce dark lines (like a 2B). It’s a real hybrid pencil, smooth to use and glides well over the paper. I use 170gsm Artway Studio Cartridge paper and it’s the perfect pencil. Another excellent feature is the rubber, which can be moved out as it wears and performs like a proper rubber, not like the rubber tips on those school HB pencils. It’s well shaped and a great asset to the pencil. It also stops it rolling off an uneven platform!
The pencils are quite long at 20cm compared to others (Derwent are 18) so make sure they’ll fit in your pencil case and I like the fact that they come in a robust box with a nice design. I think I’ll stick with this brand for the foreseeable future. I like it a lot and I think that even at over £2.25 per pencil it’s worth the expense. Give it a try.

The rubbers are useless as all pencil-end rubbers, they also erode quickly but are not worth replacing.
Beautiful but expensive over all.
