She's the best duelist in town, defeats any baddie without a scratch on her, brilliant, jaded because of a sad backstory, witty, blah blah blah... all at the age of 17.
There are much better books out there.
The protagonist, Sara Fairchild, is a fun one, deadly with a blade and possessing “battle magic” powers (more about sensory heightening than physical world effects), though clearer details on how that magic works would have been beneficial. It’s refreshing to have a female MC in a genre adventure not be forced awkwardly into a romance, too; something may develop in that regard in a later book, but not here. Such a hardened creature, even admitting someone is her friend was a bit like pulling teeth.
After a stylish and engaging opening chapter, the plot lingers on guarding a collector's magic valuables in a warehouse. Sara's character was a bit thinly developed during this extended passage, and despite some bursts of action, the doldrums threatened to set in while waiting for the plot to kick into gear. But the storytelling (and story in general) picks up around the halfway point as action plunges into a mercenary convoy and the battlefield. The cliffhanger was a bit abrupt for my taste; there isn't really a satisfying climax to a major story thread that leads into new mysteries and perils...it just sort of ends, (literal) door wide open.
Overall, a fairly quick, engaging read, and worthwhile if the genre suits your tastes.
I was soon drawn into a world full of unexpected things, a variety of different magics, and a young character who has a backbone, a sense of honor, and strength. The writing was easy and fluid allowing me to get immersed in the story. The world is vast and we only get a taste. Their are hints of a complex political situation which created a civil war and more going on under the scene between different factions. It’s exciting, adventurous, and fast paced.
I try to avoid young adults aka teenagers; because their always seems to be a lot of drama with them. They come off selfish and immature. That was not the case here with Sara the daughter of a disgraced imperial commander. She is well developed, approachable, and likable. Her methods may not always be agreeable, but she was trained to think in a certain way. We see that the world is against her all because of what happened with her father and so she has learned to keep everyone except her mother at a distances, yet Ezekiel kinda sneaks under her defenses. I liked Ezekiel he balances Sara out. They make a nice team. It was nice to see Sara’s hard mask crack at times showing that she is a person after all and I admire her willpower.
I will say the book ends quickly and I wish their was more. The ending felt like ending in the middle of a story or chapter. That is my only issue with Blades of Magic. Other then that I throughly enjoyed the first installment in the Crown Service series and plan on continuing, just to find out what happens next.
Blades of Magic is a light, easy read with a young heroine who is tough and strong in a world that is almost entirely agains her.
Rated: 3.5 Stars
The world building and magical capabilities are revealed as you go, making for convenient storytelling. Sara is incredibly knowledgeable and handy for one so young. Her sidekick, Ezekiel, is a mishmash of two or three stereotypes, almost at odds with one another.
I couldn’t really understand many of the character’s motivations and things get a bit overdramatic at times but I can let all of that stuff slide if I enjoy the story. I think it was the sense of adventure that hooked me cause I enjoyed this book very much.
Beware: The book just ends. There isn’t really a cliffhanger and there certainly isn’t any resolution. This is just the setup to start the series, which I don’t plan to continue. Even at the sale price it’s kinda expensive for such short books. There was a promise of getting the next book free for doing this review but I guess that offer has expired. Even if I did continue, the series hasn’t been finished and the last installment (book 4) was published over two years ago as of this review. It’s just not worth the literary investment to be left hanging, moving on.

The book does have some typos and you need to gloss over them to make the words work. But as I did enjoy it, I came to see how much the 2nd in the series was and was quite put off with the price, the 3rd & 4th books are even more expensive. It was good, but not that good. Shame as I did enjoy the book, but not enough to find out what happens.

Consider the Harry Potter series or Lord of the Rings. Each book is a substantial work that has the structure of a complete novel and can be read alone.
Then add in the pricing structure. First section free - that was interesting so second part at 0.99 seemed fair, but 3.99 for the last section? - you must be joking, it is not good enough to justify paying near enough 5.00 for what is, in total, a shortish novel.
The author is not alone in playing this con on their readers - but it does not endear them or create a loyal readership.

Not a lot happens, but a lot of talking that doesn't really add to the story. Never seems to need sleep, nor shows that she is very tired.
There are also a lot of grammatical mistakes, did no-one proof read it?
The character comes across as quite rude to people she has only just met for no reason as well. You want a likeable character with better qualities really, at least I do.

To earn money she goes to the fishing port to gut fish for a living , but the fish shop owner sees her potential and asks her to take up a guard role, guarding his priceless magical artefacts. Cue Ezekiel, the curator, her new friend, and her search to uncover actually what happened to her father.
The story is an easy read, enjoyable, full of action and a number of plots. The characters are developed but growing. My only negative comment is that the book needs edited and it sometimes goes of track a bit.All in all I really enjoyed it and would recommend it - it was free after all.
