This wooden samurai bokken sword from BladesUSA is a sturdy and effective piece to use for martial arts training. Patterned after classic katana swords, it has a sturdy oak build with dark-stained finish. The black wooden bokken features a well-wrapped handle, which offers a secure grip -- a feature that is not typical in the average training bokken. Both sturdy and effective, this highly efficient training tool is definitely the sort of bokken that you want. It measures 39-inches overall with a 30-inch blade.
Unlike most poorly manufactured and shoddy wooden practice katanas--also commonly referred to as samurai swords--this Boken Daito wood practice sword offers both stability and practicality. The sword boasts a sturdy oak construction with a dark-stained finish and a comfortable cord-wrapped handle, helping it last through dozens of rigorous training sessions. The new two-piece guard design, meanwhile, protects both your hands and the guard itself, so you're less likely to break the sword. Best of all, the Boken Daito practice sword looks and feels just like a real sword, with a kissak at the end of the tip and a pentagonal spine and blade. The Boken Daito measures 39 inches long total, with 30 inches dedicated to the blade.

However the hand guards fit loosely and the rubber stopper designed to keep the guard in place had a loose fitting as well. This left a woobly feel to the sword and would beat used without the guard at all.
Lastly, on of the swords was cracked upon arrival, and snapped prior to its first use.
Personally I wouldn't use this for actually hitting things- but considering the quality any that wanted to possibly could.
It is a decent production, no wood splinter and the weight feels consistent and balanced. Personally this bokken has the right weight; it is light enough for me to get into things, but have sufficient weight that it helps me to firm up my muscle groups. Note, I am only using this for exercise, not Kendo, so I do not know how this item would serve some one interested in Kendo.
The down side is that if you do end up sweating in your hands (which I do), the wrapping do come off within few months after daily use. But, if you wear a glove then the wrapping really doesn't matter, neither does the plastic guard which I also don't use. The finish will also rub off on walls depending on the paint used; I once simply lean the bokken on a wall, that resulted in a black mark which took me nearly 10 minutes to get rid off without actually repaint the wall.
Overall, I'd say for the price this is an excellent exercise tool, provided you are aware of possible coloring of the wall and wrapping coming off.
