Unless you're a hardcore Blair Witch fan... you can skip out on this one. I loved the first Blair Witch Project, but this film completely lacks the subtlety of the original... and loses pretty much all effectiveness as a result. As it stands, it's just another run-of-the-mill found footage movie packed with cheap jump scares, questionable acting and extremely lazy writing. There were a few interesting new ideas introduced to the lore, but they do little to diminish the mediocrity of the movie overall.

From the very beginning, absolutely everything about the movie is just... fake? The fresh-faced trendy actors, the too-perfect-yet-still-jittery framing, unrealistic dialogue, overproduced "camera glitches" and paper-thin characters are a bit eye-rolling, and fall woefully short of the gritty and raw feeling that made the original film somewhat believable. If you can push through these problems, though, the movie might manage to hold your interest as the group begins their trek into the woods, if only to see what happens to them. The scares are way too loud and telegraphed to inspire any real dread, and the movie ends up evoking more of a cheesy slasher feel than creeping horror... so if you're expecting to come out of this movie truly unsettled, prepare to be disappointed. Even still, the last 20 minutes or so are a bit of a wild (if campy and uneven) ride, so that alone is the reason I'm rating it above one star.

SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!

I REALLY hated that they actually showed the witch, and that she was just another cookie-cutter, lanky, slender, godzilla-roaring zombie thing that always manages to be 20 feet behind the characters. It was such a lazy design that it completely killed any tension I'd been feeling up until the end.

I don't know why people think this is a terrible movie. Sure, it's definitely similar to the original, obviously, but you have to admit it's a million times better than Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. I like this movie very much, definitely gave me major creeps and made me very uncomfortable and claustrophobic (especially tunnel scene). I don't get scared easily, but this one definitely got to me (and my friends). I grew up in the forest, so this hits close to home with me, where a other people grew up in the city and didn't affect them the same as me. But I definitely recommend this one! :)

Unlikeable actors and lame storyline make for a boring hour...worth it for the last 20 minutes...maybe...at least a LITTLE bit of "horror" there to redeem an otherwise wasted 1.5 hours.

I like the original, still to this day. I was hoping this would be similar to it, or follow its lead/example. Not so much...
Over-hyped failed reload that goes way into left field fantasy land; that is how I would describe this movie. Very disappointing, because it had the opportunity & potential to be even greater than the original by being true to the original's storyline & style...

I mean, it's basically exactly like the first one just with a little minor story difference. It's like the original Blair Witch Project meets The Ruins. After so many years, you'd think they would have a better story angle. There was only one part that was kind of cool in a horror story way, but that was all of like two minutes. Just seemed mashed together to get a few more bucks out of people. I would wait until it's prime free; don't waste your money like I did.

I think it tried to do a slow burn like the original, but boy did it fail - majorly.

Do yourself a favor. If you watch it, either multitask during or outright skip the first half. Just watch the last 50 minutes. The last 20 minutes were genuinely scary to me, but the rest was a major snoozer. The acting isn't great, the script is awful, and the first half was really hard for me to get through. The stupid LOUD jump scares were more annoying than anything. I can't stand that boom of music combined with someone bumping into someone harmless. So over used. So stupid. There's at least a dozen of those kinds of cheap scares in the first half.

Considering I preordered this movie way back in August, I'm majorly disappointed.

a basically successful blend of BWP and Book of Shadows BW2, BW3 marks the continuing one-star gradual descent from the five-star original, IMO. This is by far the least involving of the three, due mainly to a nearly lackadaisical sense of direction. The franchise deserves better! What saves this movie from 2 star infamy is solid visuals, especially the last 30 minutes. So, as much as you can, Enjoy!

After 15-20 years or so James (James Allen McCune) returns to Blair to locate his sister Heather based on some film he saw on line. He gets a crew, GPS, Walkie Talkies, a drone and two local guides. They get in the woods but it won't let them out and it stays dark so they wouldn't have to spend any money showing you cool stuff or creating special effects. The special effects hit on all the negatives: ground cam, foot cam, sky cam, tree cam, "what was that" cam, jerk cam, scream in the dark cam, drag on the ground cam, flashlight fail cam, blurred cam, and panic whine cam. It was all annoying, done before and better. I liked "Blair Witch 2" more, even though this sequel makes more sense, it was just done so poorly. Lane (Wes Robinson) was half decent. I expected more from Adam Wingard.
