The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the overall quality of the writing. I understand it was supposed to be Blake's experience but I would like to have had more detail, I guess more story in essence.
This is really one to read if you have any interest in the Civil War. It gives insight into the real experience.
The battles are well researched and accurate to both places and dates. Yet the characters and story are fictional. There are some gruesome parts as you would expect for a Civil War story, but they are handled well, as the reality of the war, not to sensationalize or purposely sicken the reader.
Because Blake resides with three different groups of people through the book, his home, the Rebel Army and the Union Army, there may be a few too many characters for young readers. At first I was confused as to who the target audience was. The book weighs in at only 150 pages and the main character is 11, suggesting it could be for 9-12 or so. However, now finished I would say that older elementary children, especially boys would enjoy the story though it may be a stretch for some. With several other characters at the 12 and older age, the book has an interest and reading level more suited to Middle School and up.
I like stories that promote triumph despite struggle. I think we need more stories of boys and young men who push through. This one fits that and more. I am happy to have read it and encourage you to read it as well, and I will be encouraging boys and young men to read it on my blog boysread.club.
