This second installment of the Stone Mountain Mystery series finds Kalin and her fiancé Ben soon to be married until a fire sweeps through the resort where they live and work. Just as Kalin is about to evacuate, her dog runs off and her pregnant friend Nora calls to say that she’s just gone into labor. The realization that the fire was deliberately set, plus the sudden death of Ben’s best friend leads to plenty of drama as everyone tries to cope with events.

Blaze had me on my seat from the get-go. Author Kristina Stanley vividly describes the fire and the speed with which things spiral out of control. While crime solving certainly drives the story, the real focus is the characters’ emotional lives. Heartbreak, regret, guilt, bullying, and abuse all entwine in the characters’ relationships. It’s resulted in a novel with a lot of heart. Of course, not everyone’s problems are resolved at the end, and why should they in a series?

At Ben’s insistence, Kalin tries not to get involved with the investigation, but since she’s the resort’s security director her boss has expectations. As Ben grows increasingly frustrated with Kalin, her need to ask questions forces her into a dilemma. Kalin takes risks, some unintentionally and one deliberately that had me wanting to yank her out of harm’s way, but that’s who Kalin is; a character with a strong sense of justice and great determination to do what’s right. What more can you ask for in a heroic protagonist?

Blaze begins with his sentence: “Instead of exchanging wedding vows in front of friends and family, Kalin Thompson prepared her home for excavation.” What follows is a tense journey into a forest fire where tragedy puts Kalin’s relationship with her fiancé in a shaky situation and the entire Stone Mt. ski resort in shambles.
While the plot revolves around Kalin trying to discover who set the fire and why, the novel offers intriguing drama into the intricate interrelationship among a well-drawn cast of characters. Appearing are characters from Descent, Book 1 of the series but the author also introduces some new characters (and dogs) adding to the strength of the novel.
Although Kalin Thompson is a feisty character and Blaze marks her even more solid as a series protagonist, I was just as much interested in what happens to the minor characters. A well written novel that kept me interested until the end.

The alluring setting, unique characters, and surprising twists kept me hooked – and guessing. Just like while watching engaging movies, I found myself nearly shouting out loud at one particular character, ‘Don’t do it!’ With its double mystery, I became captivated by this small town’s drama and couldn’t put the book down. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Kristina Stanley's fans of Descent, the 1st of the Stone Mt. Mystery series, will not be disappointed with Blaze. The cast of characters the reader meets in Descent continue to evolve and we are introduced to some important new ones. The reader becomes involved with every character and everything happening at Stone Mt. in addition to trying to solve a mystery.
Blaze is a fast paced and intriguing read that makes us anxious for #3!

"Blaze" is Kristina Stanley's second mystery, and just as well written as "Descent". We return to the beloved characters of our ski resort in the Canadian Rockies, and follow them through the twists and turns of a devastating fire that hits their village. By now, the figures in the novel are well beloved friends, and Kristina does an excellent job throwing the shadow of suspicion first on one, then another one of the people we know so well by now. You find yourself thinking: "oh no, I hope he didn't do it"!
I highly recommend this book to all the mystery lovers out there, and my only warning is that you better clear your schedule before starting the book - you won't want to put it down!

This is more of a character driven drama than a mystery. The mystery was who started a fire. Then there was a lot of drama about PTSD, a possible child murder, baby daddy issues, drug addiction, bullying, lying, etc. Reminded me of a Lifetime movie. The author did her research on ski resorts, fire fighting, etc. The characters were interesting enough. But there were a lot of them, so that their issues were wrapped up rather quickly. With so many characters and so many story threads, the story was a little slow moving. But I would read more of this author's work.
