Product Description

The Blazer PT4000 Pencil Torch is a pencil-shaped, refillable butane gas torch that creates a precise flame emitting from a nozzle head, allowing direct heat application to an object. It is used for detailed purposes such as brazing, plumbing, soldering, jewelry making, culinary, and dental and lab applications.

The PT4000 has a slim, pencil-shaped design, intended for ease of portability and storage. It has a quick-start ignition ball, located at its base, for one-touch operation. The torch has a pull-down, retractable stand for hands-free work.

The torch houses a piezoelectric ignition system, which is based on a pressurized molecular reaction, and requires no electric connection. Piezoelectric energy occurs when the trigger is activated, releasing a small, spring-loaded internal hammer that strikes a crystal, producing a spark and resulting in gas flame ignition.

With a maximum flame temperature of 2,500 degrees F, the PT4000 has a continuous burn time of approximately 30 minutes, at maximum fuel volume. It has a 4-gram gas capacity. The torch flame range is 0.75 to 2.0 inches. For safety purposes, it comes with a manual lock of the ignition, when not in use. It measures 6.0 (l) x 0.75 (d) inches, weighs 2.0 ounces and has a matte black body finish. This product is intended strictly for use in professional and industrial environments. In accordance with federal regulations, home use of this product is prohibited.

Since 1985, Blazer Products has created an array of professional and industrial tools and equipment. Located in Farmingdale, NY, the company manufactures a variety of micro torches and ultrasonic cleaners. Blazer Products is known worldwide for its original micro torch products.

The PT4000 Pencil Torch operates with a standard butane canister (sold separately).

Please see the BUT below!
Original review: {This is a sweet little pencil torch. It gets hotter and lasts longer than any other teeny torch (I've tried) that will fit in my pocket. :) I mean, it is not the torch of choice if you mean business but it is great for a PENCIL torch! I am going to make a new course up just for this torch. Silversmithing on the run!
I like it.}

BUT - after using it for a little while it clogged and would not accept butane. It seems it is supposed to use ONLY Blazer brand butane because the other brands (like Ronson and Zippo) are dirty and cause this clogging. It is apparently a very common problem and not fixable. - - - There is no mention of this in the description for the torch. Who knew???

This quality item works best with Vector highly filtered butane. My prior one clogged from using other butane.

This torch was great for several months but stopped accepting butane (it would just spew out the sides, and then the flame was non existant due to lack of fuel). I had a friend who bought this torch also, and hers did it almost right away. Amazon was awesome- they sent me a replacement torch six months later, but that torch didn't accept butane at all. Then they sent ANOTHER replacement- same thing. So long story short, this torch is a great size and easy to use, but it is useless since something is wrong with the butane intake.

These are tough and finger-safe! I had one last 2 years with heavy heavy usage! It's appreciated that fingers are nowhere near flames on this, unlike many other inferior products I've tried which get too hot to hold after a while or they just break.

The built-in stand is a must-have to keep furniture and house-hold safe while it's locked-on in use.

The easy bottom click is quiet and nearly effortless.
HINT: Just bounce the entire torch's bottom off the table-top and instantly it's lit up. That way you don't have to move your hand off the flame adjustment controls and on/off switch.

The flame control is stable and if gas refills are good quality gas (no $.99 cheapies!) and the device is properly bled beforehand (let it run all the way out first!!!) you will not have "bouncing flame" problems!

I'm buying my second one now and can't wait to receive it!

Works great! Flame is long and it has a deceptively large butane tank. It fits in the pocket easily and clearly is made with high quality Japanese parts. Since the starter button is blunt and large right on the bottom of the device you can push it against the table or leg easily lighting the device as the button has little resistance after adjusting the fuel right by your thumb... you can easily light the thing with one hand!! sorry for the wordy language you'll see what I mean if you buy it. I am in love with this little guy, ill be using it for years.

I picked this Blazer PT-4000 up on Amazon for $35. It's marketed by Blazer as only being for "professionals", but I can see it being useful around the house too. I personally got it as a toy. The body is heat resistant plastic and the business end is made of anodized aluminum (type II by the looks of it). The switch engages nicely and it would be really hard to accidently turn it on in your pocket.

It's ignited by pressing a button on the bottom that creates a spark via the torch's piezoelectric ignition system. No batteries required. It features a stand near the hot end that's convenient.

The flame is advertised as being adjustable between three-quarters and two inches. In reality an inch is stretching it, I think. It still has plenty of reach. It never fails to light unless there's a bunch of wind.

The flame does blow out easily, though I consider that a safety feature. One thing I don't want is a 2,500' F flame being dropped onto the carpet. My only complaint is that it feels cheaper than I thought it would (although not "Chinese cheap"). The body has some flex if you try to He-Man it around.

Other than that I can definitely recommend this torch, even if just as a toy. It fits in your pocket and is efficient with fuel. Don't know if it will run on high for 30 minutes as advertised, but it's certainly a fuel sipper.

For $35 you can't go wrong.

------------UPDATE: 03/20/2014------------

The torch has stopped lightning. Given the frequency of use (not very often), I feel it should've lasted longer than this, so I'm lowering my rating from four stars to two. The piezoelectric mechanism still produced an arc, but even with a full tank it won't light for more than a split second.

This is the worst purchase I have ever made on Amazon. I am a jeweler and use several butane torches. I needed a pencil torch so that I wouldn't ruin the more delicate pieces of jewelry that I make. I saw this torch and thought it looked like a good one. After reading the reviews, I decided to order one. Sure, there was a chance that my torch would be faulty, but I took that risk every time I bought a torch.

I started having problems with my torch the day it came in. When I started pressing the different buttons to differentiate between the ignite button and the fuel intake button, I was shocked to hear a hissing sound. I clicked the igniter and to my surprise the torch lit up. It is hazardous to ship a torch with fuel. What if it had been left outside during the summer? I tried to put my uneasy feelings behind but things kept going wrong. Sure, the torch was great at first. It did everything I had wanted it to. Then I had to refill it. I use Blazer's triple refined butane fuel on all of my torches. I haven't had a single problem with it until this torch. None of the tips fit the fuel tank. I had one that appeared to fit it correctly. I discovered it didn't the hard way when my hand became coated with butane. It actually ate the skin off of my index finger, making it difficult to hold the torch in place. After 30 minutes of struggling to refuel it, I had enough fuel for two minutes. I eventually filled it up enough to last ten minutes. Then the worst malfunction I have ever seen in a torch happened. While I was using, it I heard a "click, click, click." I looked at the torch and realized the fire from the torch was going closer towards my hand with each click. I held it up and realized why. The igniter was clicking shooting the fire up towards me.
