Jason van Gumster does a lot of things. Mostly he makes stuff up. He writes, animates, and occasionally teaches. He has heavy entrepreneurial tendencies that run nearly as deep as his creative ones… so he has a constant fascination with producing creative content with as much control and independence as possible. Naturally, he's a big proponent of open source software; very nearly everything that he produces is made using Free and open source tools.

Using those open source tools, Jason ran his own small, independent animation studio for 8 years. And in the course of that, he had the privilege of managing mid-sized international production teams on ridiculously tight deadlines (4-7 minutes of CG animation in 2 days)… for fun. He's transferred some of that experience in writing to two separate books, Blender For Dummies and GIMP Bible. The rest of that experience he continues blurt out a bit at a time during his weekly[-ish] podcast, the Open Source Creative Podcast.

Currently based just outside of Atlanta, Georgia, Jason spends the majority of his time drinking coffee and trying to be awesome. The former he's pretty much gotten down to a science. The latter… well, every now and again he succeeds at that one and makes it look like it wasn’t an accident.

This is a must have book for Blender. The explanations are good and there is a lot of information in this book. The one thing that would benefit it is more examples. Some topics are not covered at all, but this is the nature of Blender. There is just too much to cover in one book. I wish the author would have written a follow up book. Also, this book was written for Blender 2.8, so it is showing its age in that respect but it's not a huge problem.

I found my self very frustrated trying to learn Blender because of the sheer magnitude and complexity of the program, and the official online documentation was hard to follow. This book is organized very well. So far, many things I have read in this book has made a lightbulb go off in my head. "Oh THAT's why they do that!". If I had looked at this book before I had some experience with blender I might have found it hard to follow. There is no substitute for hands on learning and gaining muscle memory through sheer repetition, however if you follow this book in conjunction with physical familiarity with the program, what he is saying becomes more intuitive. I don't find this book boring at all. It is well thought out, comprehensive, and accessible. I'm glad I found it.

Blender is not something that is easily learned in a book. It gives a lot of head knowledge, when what Blender students need is hands on. Also, this book covers Blender 2.8 when my version is 3.2. Much has changed. Better to go to the learning videos and follow with them, however, I keep my book around for references.

A great book on a great computer program. I stopped making model airplanes out of plastic (they gathered dust, was too expensive, they broke easily and took about 6 months to make each one) and now just draw them on my computer (takes about a day to make one and can be placed against cloudy sky or over the ocean).

Das Buch ist aktuell wenig motivierend. Ich habe von vorne zu lesen angefangen und bekomme nun auf endlos vielen Seiten beigebracht wie ich Blender für meine Zwecke anpassen kann. Dabei möchte ich doch erst einmal lernen, wie man mit diesem Tool überhaupt arbeitet (gern mit der Standardkonfiguration). Echt frustrierend für einen Einsteiger.
