Freshly-ground flour can add flavor as well as nutrition to a particular pastry or bread recipe. This home grinding mill turns a wide range of legumes and grains into a choice of fine, medium, or coarse ground flour at the turn of a knob and push of a button. The compact unit features a motorized hopper/base that fits snugly over a 15-cup clear polycarbonate milling pan. The secret to the Blendtec mill is its surgical quality stainless-steel micronetic grinding chamber; designed to stay sharp and avoid overheating, the micronetic grinding teeth will not destroy valuable nutrients.

The mill grinds up to one pound of grain per minute. In addition to the more common grains such as wheat, oats, rice, rye, and buckwheat, the mill works on dried pinto and green beans, popcorn kernels, soybeans, chickpeas, dried sweet corn, and more (the user's guide includes a list). The mill is not intended for use on coffee beans, nuts, seeds (including sunflower, poppy, and sesame), or spices, as their oil or moisture content is high and may cause gumming. An included cyclone cup attaches to the underside of the mill to help separate the flour from the air passing through the mill. The base of the mill measures 8 by 10 by 4-1/2 inches, while the pan measures 8 by 10 by 7 inches. The pan inverts over the mill for compact storage. Blendtec covers the mill's motor and workmanship with a 6-year warranty, the milling chamber and milling pan with a lifetime warranty. --Ann Bieri

I have been using this mill for 5 years and expect to be using it in 20 more years. I bake 1 loaf of bread twice a week with flour I grind at the same time. The bread is simply the best we have ever found and fresh. The machine is very, very loud but it gets through enough flour for a loaf of bread in 2 minutes, no big deal. Others are more quiet but this excels in quality and ease of use.

Mill effectively grinds food, fairly quickly, is basic and easy to set up and take apart.

However, materials are such that it cracks or breaks easily, as evidenced by the fact that the motor housing was broken when it arrived -- alright if you don't move much, but doesn't fit our lifestyle. The mill is very noisy. The mill tends to be very messy to clean up once you are done with a grinding job -- there is no easy way to contain the dust. We opted for the Nutrimill and are much happier even though it is more expensive -- it is quieter, compact, better materials, and not nearly as messy (but a little more complex to set up at first).

We have now used this mill more than a dozen times. It's very loud, so make sure you wear ear protection, but it does a nice job of grinding spelt and einkorn berries. That's all we do with it. We typically grind about 6 cups of flour at a time and put what we don't use in jars into the freezer.

I highly recommend this machine if that's what you do. I've never used any other mill, so I can compare it to others. I can just say that we're very happy to own it.

((BTW, in regard to heat generated, I put the meat thermometer into the flour today immediately after grinding 6 cups. It was about 95 degrees. I don't think that temperature is a problem, but others may know more about that.))

Tip 1. The mill can spray individual berries back out of the feed area, so you can end up with a few berries spread around your kitchen. (That's the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.) And you want to be sure you don't feed any contraband into it. A small pebble could fatally damage your machine. So I cover almost the entire fill area with something like a magazine (I usually use a printed recipe in a sheet protector because we have a recipe out). I leave only about 2" at the top of the fill area exposed. I slowly pour the spelt into that small area so that I can carefully inspect the grain as it falls in, looking for any type of debris. The vibration of the machine feeds the grain down into the machine, but pouring at the top end gives me time to remove anything that looks suspicious. The sheet protector prevents any berries from flying out.

Tip 2. It's challenging to clean the machine without making a mess. I remove the bottom storage, remove the attached cup, make a quick effort with a brush, and take out the fiber filter.

I owned and used this mill daily for many years (12 years, I think) - that is 3 of them. The grinding worked great - I have no qualms with that. But it is not the most convenient, nor the sturdiest I've used. (It was back when I got my first one. Before the newer ones came out, I think this was the best.)

It is noisier than the newer mills, and produces more flour dust in the room (though it isn't bad - I've seen far noisier and "dustier" ones). The small hopper is a bit inconvenient, as is removing the mill head to get to the flour in the flour pan, as is the small hole the grain feeds through (you have to pretty much handfeed corn and larger beans to keep them flowing).

The biggest problem we had was the clips that hold the head to the pan would crack, and on one of our mills the underside of the head developed a pretty big crack. This mills were still usable, but you couldn't get as good of a seal (to keep down that flour dust).

The company was great to work with though about getting it fixed - and these problems occurred after a few years of use. So it's a good mill, but not the one I'd buy today. We sold and recommended this mill for years, but now Me and My House uses and recommends the NutriMill.

In response to another review... Great workmanship in my eyes, Please don't blame Blendtec for the careless handling by the shipper, I am sure that the shippers have elephants for staff sometimes....

This machine is loud... But, ear plugs are cheap.
I love my machine and use it constantly. My daughter has celiac disease and this wonderful machine makes grinding my own rice and bean flours possible. (Fava beans will not fit into any of the kitchen mills and they are VERY VERY hard. But you can easily grind any other legume. We have broken up Fava beans, but they seems so hard to us. Please ask manufacturer before grinding Fava beans. I did not and then worried about it.) We grind Pinto Beans, white beans, garbanzo, etc. Take a look at the book Country Beans...
I am in the market for a 2nd machine to grind wheat for the rest of us who do not have celiac disease. We used to grind wheat in the first machine, but we ground a large quanitity of popcorn in it and then used it for the non-GF part of the family before using it for GF foods. (Cross contamination is a big problem for people with celiac disease.) I do not reccomend using the same mill for a celaic's food and wheat also.
From talking to others who have bought other mills this one is the best choice for the money. The other mills are quieter, but they can clog and the extra money may not be worth a bit less noise.
Great Machine great reputation.
