About the Author

Since 1972, "Mama Donna" Henes has designed and led multicultural, nondenominational celebrations, bringing the power of ancient, traditional rituals to contemporary ceremonies. Henes leads New York City's annual Village Halloween Parade and performs at outdoor equinox and solstice celebrations throughout the Big Apple. An addiction to home arrangement books has served me well through hygge, KonMari, Swedish death cleaning, and Feng Shui. Donna Henes is above a concern with clutter. Whatever you have, you need. She teaches you to appreciate your stuff and your environment. While reading her “Bless This House: Creating Sacred Space Where You Live, Work and Travel” (published by Ixia Press), I realized that I have a couple of altars already: a thought-out medicine cabinet, and a vintage ceramic platter on which to drop my keys, so I never misplace them, along with loose change. These are obvious shrines to health and to prosperity. But now, I also have a rotating art exhibit arranged on the mantelpiece, as an invocation to the muses.

One of Henes’s suggestions is that when a guest leaves, walk through your quarters with a smudge stick aglow. This does not mean that you did not like the guest; it is simply a way of taking back possession of the place on earth that makes you feel most comfortable.

I imagine if I walked into Marie Kondo’s house and opened a drawer, I would not find every item folded and stacked vertically. (I mean, I hope I would, but I wouldn’t hold her to it.) But I may be swinging over to Donna Henes’s camp and creating mises-en-scene. Donna Henes’s home in a former schoolhouse in Brooklyn is a testament to her philosophy. Her home is a “living museum” (p. 130). Every room was attractive and colorful, like Frida Kahlo’s house in Coyoacan, near Mexico City. I was so inspired from attending a seminar at Mama Donna Henes’s place! I have no doubt that she used a smudge stick after I left. And I am not offended by that.

Read “Bless This House,” which is original, fearless, and no-bullshit.

I love this book. It is written in such a fun and yet informative way. There are so many ideas to work with. She gives perspectives, information and ritual ideas from many different cultures. I was enjoying reading it so much that half way through the book I realized I had not highlighted information I wish to use in my own house blessing. I am going to go back and read through to do this. But it is such an enjoyable book to read, that rereading will be as enlightening as the first time.
