In two stories per day for a full calendar year, Ellsberg sketches figures from biblical times to the present age and from all corners of this world—ordinary figures whose extraordinary lives point to the new age in the world to come.
Blessed Among Us is drawn from Ellsberg’s acclaimed column of the same name in Give Us This Day, a monthly resource for daily prayer published by Liturgical Press.

Editorial Reviews
Review
James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage.
"This delightful book reminds us how blessed we are, in every age, to have people of good faith who are called to love and serve people in need. They call us all to a greater purpose."
Kathleen Norris, author of The Cloister Walk and Acedia and Me
"The diversity of these holy men and women calls out my own gifts, and their total dedication alerts me to put my “yes” into motion for the day. Thank you for being a companion and inspiration for my faith journey!"
Carolyn Y. Woo, President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, and author of Working for a Better World
"This is not only a classic collection of lives of the saints but also an introduction to many un-canonized holy lives, producing such delightful juxtapositions as St. Nicholas and Mozart, St. Mary Magdalene and Albert Luthuli, St. Monica and Helder Camara. As a reader of Give Us This Day, from which these are drawn, I’ve enjoyed meeting new holy men and women and am now delighted to have them alongside traditional saints of the day. Thank you for this literary treat."
Christopher Jamison, OSB, Director of the National Office of Vocation, London, and author of Finding Sanctuary
"Saints are the living Word of God, the Word made flesh, but their biographies are often too encrusted within sentimentality and piety to serve as an inspiration for us. Ellsberg gives us their essence in this treasure of a book! Nobody writes better about the lives of the saints than Robert Ellsberg."
Ronald Rolheiser OMI, President of the Oblate School of Theology, and author of The Holy Longing and Sacred Fire
"It is a challenge to provide inspiration in a brief and daily format. Robert Ellsberg’s writing does so, exposing us to numerous little-known saints, with a generous sprinkling of contemporary saintly lives, his signature contribution. This book is a keeper."
Pat Farrell, OSF, Past President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious

This is a “must” book for every library. One early reviewer is unquestionably correct in arguing that some of the biographies are too short — there are two for every day in the calendar year — but at almost 800 pages in length, this is a great buy, one that I am proud to have and one that I use every morning as I meditate on the start of another day ahead. Others should consider doing the same.
There are 2 saints or holy people featured a day, 1 page a piece. There is usually a quote by the person at the bottom of the page and often a quote or two of the person within the body of the biography. When a quote by the person isn't available, there is a quote about him or her. This is how a number of quotes from Pope St. John Paul II from beatification and canonization homilies come in. And so this book is a treasure-trove of excellent quotes.
I noticed how some of the great intellectuals in the modern Church insist on the primacy of love:
"Christianity taught men that love is worth more than intelligence." - Jacques Maritain (1882-1973) (April 28, P. 243)
"When we consider the Mysteries of the life of Jesus, which of His perfections do we see especially shine out? It is LOVE."
- Blessed Columba Marmion (1858-1923) (October 3, P.571)
"The most important things in human life originate not in the mind alone, but in the heart and its love." - Romano Guardini (1885-1968) (Oct 1, P.567)
I don't have a Bible in front of me, but these three quotes are only an amplification of the words of St. Paul in 1 Cor 13 in which he basically says, if I have all wisdom and knowledge but have not love, I am a clanging gong or crashing symbol.
As the persecution of Christians steps up in the world, violently in the Middle East, and subtly (so far) in the form of marginalization in the West, a number of the biographies include some excellent food for thought:
"I should like to die on the battlefield in defense of the Church." - St. Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897), (October 1, P. 566)
"I have lived for Christ; I want to die for Christ." - Blessed Restituta Kafka (1894-1943) (October 29, P. 623)
(Though she was eventually beheaded in prison by the Nazis, what courage! What backbone! What fortitude, Blessed Restituka had, publicly referring to Hitler as "that fool!")
"[M]y God. It is for Him that I die. My immortal life is on the point of beginning." - St. Andrew Kim (d. 1839-1867) (September 20, P. 542)
"If Jesus could be beaten for me, I can be beaten for Him." - St. Rose of Viterbo (1235-1252) (September 4, P. 510)
Though not necessarily about martyrdom, here is another quote I like:
"Jesus alone is my hope." - Blessed Catherine of Racconigi (1486-1547) (September 4, P. 511)
So, if I plan on reading Blessed Among Us again and again, then why not five stars? One grievous error of omission - Annalena Tonelli is not included. Annalena was a devotee of Carretto, Foucauld and Gandhi and professed to "walk in the footsteps of Jesus". Although educated as a lawyer, she made medical advancements for the treatment of TB, established clinics and hospitals, built schools for the deaf and blind, fed thousands of refugees in Kenya and Somalia, exposed genocide in Kenya to the BBC and worked with Muslim clerics for the banishment of female genital mutilation. Like Foucauld, she was assassinated by Islamist extremists in 2003. She should not remain a "nobody" in America and beyond.
