'Dr. Stanley's interpretation of how God uses brokenness in our lives to bring about blessing is a dynamic force to help us accept the trials and suffering that come, knowing that the furnace situation will bring forth gold in our lives.' -- Barbara Johnson, Speaker
'After sitting under Charles Stanley's teaching for more than 25 years, I can honestly say his series on brokenness has had a greater impact in my life than any series I have ever heard him preach.' -- James Reimann, Editor
From the Publisher
Broken. Blessed. How can those two words possibly go together? Considering just how shattering life's blows can be, can we honestly believe God will bring good out of our most heartbreaking crises? "It's difficult to discern the blessing in the midst of brokenness," says Dr. Charles Stanley. "Certain circumstances in life hurt, at times so intensely that we think we will never heal." The death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a lingering illness . . . the catalysts for brokenness all possess a wrenching pain and the power to forever alter our life. But they also possess one thing more: the potential for discovering a richness in living we otherwise never would know. "After brokenness, we can experience God's greatest blessings," say Dr. Stanley. "The dawn after a very dark and storm-wracked night is glorious. Joy after a period of intense mourning can be ecstatic." First, however, we must fully experience our brokenness and confront why God allows it. With gentle wisdom, Dr. Stanley shines light on the process of being broken. He reveals the ways we protest against it. And he gives us an inspiring look beyond the pain to the promise of blessing. Brokenness is what God uses to replace our self-life with his desires and intents for us, says Stanley. Its end is blessing far greater than we could ever discover apart from being broken. It's spiritual maturity and joyous intimacy with God. Greater depth and power in our ministry to others. New dimensions of freedom, strength, and peace. And a wholeness that comes as God himself reassembles us into someone more closely resembling Jesus Christ.

I'd say about 8 years into my own insanity of this life, I was at the gym once again, trying to get some excercise for my health. I was in despair, a really dark place of just being near tears in ongoing sadness... and a young woman walked by with a book in her hand. I saw the title somewhat, I can't recall the details now, but at that time I think I saw "Stanley" or "Brokenness", maybe both.
I was drawn to talk to her, I really wanted to know what that book was about, but she was a younger attractive woman and I am mid-forties... I was concerned she'd think I was trying to hit on her, etc. I finally decided to talk to her and asked about the book, saying I'd noticed the title and knew Charles Stanley. She said, "Oh, you can have it. I've read it and God told me to bring it here for someone." That's exactly what she said, and then she handed me the book.
We ended up having a great conversation and she had suffered a tough situation of her own. I read that book, and after 8 years of mystery, basically 'knowing' but never fully being 100% sure why all the troubles were happening, God finally and clearly told me that is WAS all about brokenness.
My problems were not happening simply because I was evil, or a failure (a HUGE one for men in general), a bad husband, a sinner in general, weak or a corward, or really ANY fault of my own.Read more ›
There is another book that is helping me to cope, Write from Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal.
Immersing myself in the word has made a huge difference in the way I am healing.
