While I've been able to find a few gems through Amazon's book borrowing program, most of the available titles in the areas of my interest are formulaic, seriously lacking in proper editing, poor copycats of successful major published works, or excuses for 'authors' to indulge in writing pornography with no character, world, or story building evident.
All that being said I am pleased to take the time to give my hearty recommendation for the Marnie Baranuik Files series. I have read all books so far, (and am eagerly hoping for more), so my review applies to them in entirety.
Vampire literature has run the gamut from truly horrifying to ridiculous, but A. J. Aalto has managed to provide a fresh new perspective on vampire culture and history, along with a world that supports the idea of the 'supernatural' in an easy "suspension of disbelief". Her main characters are well fleshed, highly individualized, exhibiting dichotomies that real people have, (i.e., Marnie's extreme intelligence and education contrasting with her prolifically embellished profanities - or Harry's extreme concern for others vs. his lack of ability to love), and entirely believable in the world she's created. While there are some 'sex' scenes, they are entirely appropriate to the story, and they are not overdone.
This series provide mystery, maudlin, adventure and humor at a great pace. I found myself laughing out loud at Marnie's "colorful metaphors" - so much so that I had to share her brilliant new ways of swearing with my husband, who has now been inspired to read the series.
I stayed up too late many nights reading this series and am very much looking forward to doing so again. If you are a fan of the supernatural genre and are looking for something well written, well edited and highly entertaining - look no further.
I am left with a major question about Dunlop though, Mark had to have warned him about the type of person Marnie is. Why the hell did he treat her the way he did? Like of course she is going to defend herself from some creepy ass dude, and did Mark laugh his ass off when Dunlop came back with scissors in his ass??

There is just such a rich sense of world, a vitality that is extremely rare to find, and I always always find myself 100% involved and invested with these characters and feel everything they do. And that is no easy thing for they certainly go through the ringer. As usual I cried (quite a bit) and laughed (snorting out loud), held my breath and just about enjoyed every single second I was reading this wonderfully fabulous book. Can you tell how much I loved it? This is one of those occasions you just want to give that extra star or 10.
Marnie feels broken and admits to herself even that she is not coping with the horrific events at the end of the last book. Her grieving process is heart breaking to watch and yet she goes on in her own unique way, opening up office to take on new customers. One such customer is not quite what he seems and Marnie being Marnie is determined that she will help right a wrong no matter the cost to self. Whilst this plot seemed fairly light, alongside all the other dramas and undercurrents that come with this world, there was never a dull moment.
AJ Aalto has become one of my put everything down for, ignore the world and lose myself in the bliss of reading, authors. Can't rate this highly enough.
As usual it is amazingly written and full of laughs and sadness too. The writing is so good that I am instantly teleported to Marnie's world and can picture it vividly in my head.
I had read whispers about what may happen in this book. I really hoped they were just that. I know the majority of fans will be over the moon, but I am not.
I feel a little heartbroken at the direction I think this is going and I'm not sure I will carry on reading. I may stick with the storyline in my head which makes me happier.
Brilliant writing. Excellent characters. Just not what I expected, or wanted.
Wow what a brill book.
