An utterly gripping addition to the bestselling crime series by much-loved Scottish author, Marion Todd. Perfect for fans of Alex Gray, Caro Ramsay and the Karen Pirie series.

3 and 1 / 2 stars
DI Clare Mackay’s latest case is a convoluted investigation of the murder of a local solicitor. I really appreciate the sly humor in these books. The disagreement about how to properly eat a Kit Kat made me chuckle. I like the way Clare’s team gets along with one another.
When another murder occurs, this one obviously related to the solicitor’s murder, the tension in the story ratchets up.
Ms. Todd created believable characters. The main characters’ personal lives are cameoed in such a way as to not be obtrusive. This fleshes them out and gives the reader a chance to connect with them.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes police procedurals. While I did not like this book as much as Ms. Todd's previous novels, it is still a good read.
I want to thank NetGalley and Canelo for forwarding to me a copy of this good book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
The is a gripping mystery that keeps us on the edge of our seats as DI Mackay uncovers disturbing secrets and surprising plot twists. While investigating the murder of a local solicitor, she uncovers surprising details about his life.
DI Clare Mackay is a well-developed protagonist who is strong, determined, and relatable. You will cheer for her success as she faces personal challenges while seeking the truth.
The plot of the story is carefully crafted, weaving together multiple storylines while carefully building suspense. This is a perfect blend that pushes the narrative forward keeping us guessing what is going to happen next.
The author's attention to detail is commendable, as they effectively paint vivid scenes that bring the story to life. The book's atmospheric setting adds to the tension and enhances the overall reading experience.
While this is part of a series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone novel. However, readers who have followed DI Clare Mackay from the beginning will appreciate the continuity and development of recurring characters and subplots. I recommend to both new and old readers alike.
Fans of the DI Clare Mackay series and lovers of crime fiction will not be disappointed with this latest installment.
One of my favorite series. You could read this as a stand alone and not be lost but do yourself a favor, start with book one and keep going. You won't be disappointed. For me, the mystery is almost secondary to why I love Ms. Todd's writing. It almost feels like a family reunion when catching up with these characters yearly. She does a great job of mixing personal info with the police business and giving each character enough background to get to know and love them, even the minor side characters. The banter between Clare and Chris has never been better and you'll laugh out loud at the Kit Kat wars. That scene was so funny, I went back and re-read it a couple of times. Clare's relationship with Al moves along nicely and there are a couple of lovely scenes with her ex, Tom. I love how the author handles their relationship. And as always, there's a satisfying conclusion to the mystery. See you next year, Clare Mackay!
This is the first book I've read by this author. I really like the cover. I felt this was an enjoyable and engaging read for me. It was a good crime drama. I will read more by this author.
The story had an interesting plot, and I liked the author's writing style.
I love Clare's dog, Benjy. He's a great canine character. I don't want to give anything away about the dog, but he's just so cute, and I wanted to reach through the book and give him a big hug.
I enjoyed the banter between the characters and their relationships. The story weaves the characters' personal lives with a police procedural plot. I look forward to reading more in this series and by this author.

The story did grab me at the beginning but then started to drag a bit for me about half way which is usually what happens for me with procedurals. I’m not giving up yet..still on the look out for that procedural that keeps me engrossed from start to end..
3 1/2 stars for me, rounded up to 4.

続編もあるようなので期待。
The plot is as clever as ever and despite the various twists and complexities, it is easy to read. I feel I have grown along with these characters right from the first book and they feel like friends. I particularly like how their personal lives are part of the story but it's never overdone and never overshadows the main story. There was one particular scene where we see a more fiery Clare and I found that particularly satisfying. Roll on book 8.
