I like Gabriel Wolfe’s character, and seeing the world of the story through his eyes. There is drama and humor, but not heavy handed or forced. As Gabriel is British, there are terms and slang which I’m not familiar with but I can usually figure them out due to context or looking them up. I read my books on Kindle, which allows me to look them up quickly with out distraction or interfering with the flow of the story. I love the level of detail in the story, but in learning new information, I don’t feel talked down to, and the information is revealed in such a way that the flow is not interrupted.
Another topic included in the story, Gabriel’s struggle with PTSD was handled very well, I thought. PTSD is a very serious condition (I’ve done some reading on it) and including it as a plot point was I’ve not seen in too many of the fiction stories I’ve read which dealt with military themes. All in all, a very good read and I highly recommend this book to those in search of a great book full of action and good storytelling! I don’t want to reveal too much of the story, but I feel the reader will enjoy this new entry into this genre!
Wolfe's operation soon becomes a mission to rescue two British women who have been kidnapped by Chechen separatists and are being held somewhere in the Baltic state of Estonia. The narrative alternates between Wolfe's hunt and scenes with the Chechens and their victims. Amping up the suspense are the machinations of a Russian mafia boss and his two henchmen and Wolfe's recurring grisly battle flashbacks. Plot twists, double-crosses and mayhem ensue.
In this book, Andy Maslen deepens the reader's insight into Wolfe's psychological trauma. Like any truly good author, this slow building of the hero into a multi-dimensional character over the course of the series keeps the reader wanting to read more. Mission accomplished!
So it is with Andy Maslen. "Trigger Point" (the first Gabriel Wolfe novel) was a good read, but not great. I gave it four stars. "Blind Impact" is much improved. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. The premise behind the conflict is a bit sketchy, but the characters and the plot development are first-rate. It's a good read. I've read the first four Gabriel Wolfe novels and am about to buy the fifth.
I like the story, and I like the character, isn't that what a review is about...How "I" liked it...Would I recommend it, of course I would or I would not have taken the time to write this review (which is not being compensated for in any way by the publisher or the author or Amazon).
The pace of "Blind Impact" picked up speed faster than that of its predecessor ("Trigger Point" had some "slow" portions which was not nearly as obvious in book 2 of the Gabriel Wolfe Series.
