This is a story about Brad De Luca, divorce attorney extraordinaire, who sleeps with his clients, parties it up, and leaves by 5pm everyday. Basically, he lives a lawyer fantasy life that exists only in this book. Because if he really slept with his clients he’d be disbarred in five seconds. I don’t care how big his, well you know, is. And he’s not old enough to be able to bill at $600 an hour and leave at 5pm. You know who gets to do that? Old partners who are near death and have geriatric issues, that’s who.
Sorry. I really try to suspend my real life knowledge of things when I read. I get that there’s a fantasy going on, but this just took it too far from me. Perhaps its jealousy. I don’t know. but it pissed me off. Which then didn’t help matters as Brad continued to piss me off.
Julia is a pre-law student who is interning at Brad’s law firm. Everyone says to STAY AWAY FROM BRAD AT ALL COSTS. Come on guys, that’s like holding out a chocolate chip cookie and saying, ‘oh, hey. yea, i’m just gonna leave that right here. don’t look at it or touch it. k?’ Obviously that tactic fails. Especially since Brad’s hot and delicious looking.
Julia and Brad have a lot of back and forth banter which was pretty enjoyable. I really liked it when Julia had a backbone. And for the most part, the Vegas trip was fun, sexy & hot. AND THEN. holy jesus. I will not give away spoilers, but while they are in Vegas I was so angry with Brad’s actions. My notes read:
“Oh hi brad, I now [censored] hate you. seriously. you are a royal piece of [censored].” &
“don’t think I care that he’s an amazing [censored]. I’m not sure he can do ANYTHING to make up for his actions. I’m sort of enraged. I may need to calm down.”
So here I am livid. Pissed off for Julia. Pissed off that Brad’s a jerkface. And then what happened? Julia finds out and is all “oh, ok.” WHAT?! Ugh. I was so pissed off and she just brushes it off like he just told her he picked up his laundry. OH OK JULIA.
I am so conflicted. I thought that their chemistry was great and their sex sizzled, but other than that, I was dismayed, confused, and annoyed by Brad. The ending made me hate him slightly less, but even as innocent Julia starts to experiment more with Brad’s lifestyle, I couldn’t fall in love with them together. This might be my problem more than the book’s problem. I recognize that, and thus I gave it three stars because there WERE some great parts and the writing is pretty good. Apparently I just can’t get over Brad De Luca.
The Diary of Brad De Luca
End of the Innocence
Book 1, Blindfolded Innocence features 21 year old college senior Julia Campbell interning for the semester at the law firm of Clarke, De Luca & Broward. They assign interns at this firm based on sex. That being, anyone of the female sex is not assigned to Brad De Luca. So you know what happens right? Of course Brad wants her. I love a delicious older man, younger woman scenario. Bring it. Julia is a strong woman. She's not interested in risking her reputation and future law career on a fling with a partner in the firm. But... the best laid plans, right? This is the point that I need to tell you something. There's a bit of a twist to this alpha man playboy story. Brad likes to share.
Are you still with me? When I read the first book I wasn't sure where this was going. Was this a standalone kinky book? A series? Where the hell was this going? Do I want to read a whole series about a guy that is willing to share the heroine? How is that going to work? I love the alpha male "you are mine" books, how does a guy whose kink is sharing going to work for me? It works. Oh, does it work. If you read book one expecting a sex fest you're going to be disappointed. It takes a while. Wait for it.
Book 2, Masked Innocence picks up soon after book 1, but things have shifted. Brad turns from this player into... dare I say... book boyfriend extraordinaire. You think I'm going to tell you that he fell so in love with Julia that he didn't want to share her anymore right? I'm not. He still wants to share and it's still hot. I should clarify for you that it is sharing with other men. While he watches. There is no touching between the men. It feeds his competitive drive to watch someone else pleasure her, then pleasure her himself. It works. Trust me, it works. Brad & Julia are devoted to each other. They have a bond and Brad is freaking fantastic in this book. He's crazy about Julia. You should note, the focus of the book doesn't end up being a sex romp. Nope, this is actually a love story. Brad realizes how much Julia means to him and how far he's willing to go for her. How much he's willing to commit to save her. But I won't go into any of that. You've gotta read the book.
Book 3, End of the Innocence starts with a hint of the danger to come. I promptly checked the lock on my door and gripped my ipad close. Julia is in danger. I don't know yet when this danger is going to pop out and scare the crap out of me, but I know it's coming. For now, Julia's biggest worry is that her relationship with Brad is about to be ousted to the entire law firm. The staff's reaction, and Julia's discomfort had me grinning in delight.
Brad & Julia's relationship grows. The danger continues to lurk. From me. Because I am about to cut a b to get to Brad. Julia is lovely, I have no beef with her. I just think that Brad should be real. And mine. So I might be willing to help someone get rid of her. Bad guy, call me! The last 15% of the book, I couldn't put it down. Stay up late & finish kind of can't put down. Brad is head over heels in love with Julia. He's delightful and alpha and charming throughout. He went from Player Brad in book 1 to Book Boyfriend Brad in books 2 & 3. I will miss him.
Julia knows going in that Brad De Luca is a manwhore. As an attorney who's known to sleep with his clients, he apparently also owns a gentleman's club in Vegas and has a girl on the payroll who only has sex with him. On top of this, he meets Julia, an intern at his firm who liked to lead men on and then not take it anywhere because she only believes in sex with love attached to it. Except really, she doesn't need a lot of persuading to break all of her boss's rules about fraternization within the company and have sex with Brad. He has sex with other people while he's pursing her which undermines this supposed attachment he has to her, and then he manages to persuade her to pretty much through her moral compass to the wind and do what he wants.
It feels like he despairs of ever having a real relationship, having a failed marriage behind him because he prefers variety. He manages to convince Julia to let him keep having sex with other women while Julia has sex with other men, so they're going to be swingers. And this is ROMANCE? What about all of the other women De Luca had been sleeping with? He didn't seem to need to share them, but apparently it's different with Julia? I don't know, this really didn't work for me AT ALL. It just felt really inconsistent and flimsy. At the end of the day, the book left me with a really bad taste in my mouth and it's not because of the swinging element. I've read and loved Kit Rocha's books but this writer didn't really accomplish what I think she was trying to here.
