From New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter, the first novel in her acclaimed Grant County Series.
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it’s only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer’s twisted work becomes clear.
Sara’s ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation—a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he’s got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, because the county’s only female detective, Lena Adams—the first victim’s sister—wants to serve her own justice.
But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath… or mean her death.

Without warning, the body jerked violently, pitching forward and slamming Sara onto the floor. Blood spread out around both of them, and Sara instinctively clawed to get out from under the convulsing woman. With her feet and hands she groped for some kind of purchase on the slick bathroom floor. Finally, Sara managed to slide out from underneath her. She turned Sibyl over, cradling her head, trying to help her through the convulsions. Suddenly, the jerking stopped.
Sibyl is, or was, Sibyl Adams, a college professor who had the misfortune of being drugged, savagely raped, slashed, and left for dead in the toilet of the local diner, to be coincidentally discovered by Sara Linton. Coincidences don't stop there, and neither do the rapes and murders. The next is, unimaginably, still more gruesome than the first and it, too, is discovered by Dr. Linton. Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver is Sara's ex-husband, and mercurial detective Lena Adams, another major player in the ensuing drama, was Sibyl's twin sister.
And the monster behind these increasingly more depraved acts? Suspects abound, from the diner's jack-of-all-trades, Will Harris, to Victim No. 2's boyfriend, to Jack Allen Wright who, a dozen years prior, raped Dr. Linton (that rape had been a secret until now). There are other possibilities, naturally, and it soon becomes apparent that Sara's an intended target.
A graduate of the Patricia Cornwell school of mayhem and gore, Slaughter has faithfully stitched together a fast, engaging, and diverting read complete with a strong-yet-vulnerable heroine. Characters are nicely if somewhat obviously drawn, the plot is inventive, and the narrative's pacing quickens the pulse straight to the cliff-hanging denouement. And really, what more can you ask of an ME thriller? --Michael Hudson

These books are not for the faint-hearted. They are quite brutally graphic stories about social problems we face today. An in-depth study of imperfect people. But, she does an amazing job with her character and story development. I think I'm hoping there isn't another prequel series. Thank you Karin Slaughter. Just remind people to start here, please.
GOOD READ AND I WILL GO TO THE NEXT ONE IN THE SERIES.
Chief of police Jeffrey Tolliver is faced with a sadistic killer. He is also Sara's ex-husband and there is plenty of tension left between them. Another conflict is that the victim is the twin sister of his top detective, Lena Adams. Lena already has issues being the only female in the small Georgia town police force and she is determined to be on the case although everyone knows it shouldn't be allowed.
Clues are scarce and before Jeffrey makes much progress, the killer strikes again. This time he kidnaps a student from the local college and when she is found, two things become apparent. The killer is working through a religious framework and his main target is Sara. Sara has a background that already has a criminal in it. She was attacked in Atlanta years ago during her residency. Is this the same man or is someone new?
This is the first novel in the Grant County series and an early book in the successful career of Karin Slaughter. The violence is graphic and the reader needs to be prepared for it. Along with the horrific crimes, there is tension between Sara and Jeffrey as they work on what their relationship should be post divorce. There are plenty of twists and turns and the reader will finish with a real appreciation for why Karin Slaughter is such a powerful force in the mystery genre. This book is recommended for mystery readers.
Blindsighted revolves around three main characters.
First, there is Sara Linton, a pediatrician who also works as the town's coroner. Sara moved back to her hometown after finishing her residency in Atlanta. She's well respected and liked. She was married to the chief of Police, Jeffrey Tolliver until he cheated. She still cares for him but she tries to keep her distance.
Jeffrey knows he made a huge mistake when he hurt Sara and lost her at the same time. He has been trying to make amends without really gaining any ground. As the police chief, he's good at his job and he wants his town to be a safe place to live in.
Lena Adams is the only female cop in town. She's a smart woman. She also carries a lot of anger. She lost her parents when she was too young and she and her sister went to live with her uncle, Hank, who was a drug addict and alcoholic. Now as an adult, she doesn't have a good relationship with Hank but when her twin sister is found murdered in a dinner, her sole purpose in life is to find the man capable of such violence towards her twin.
Sara is the first one to find the victim. Because of her job, she will need to interact with Jeffrey. Lena is determined to find the murderer and get some justice even if she has to break protocol and defy her chief.
Blindsighted had a great cast. I like Sara. She was smart, resourceful and independent. I wasn't sure about Lena. She was too angry and defiant but by the end, I was hurting for her. Jeffrey, I'm not sure yet. He was good as a cop but he had no good excuse for cheating (just in case, there is NO excuse). I do feel like he loves Sara and I'm willing to wait and see where their relationship goes from here.
In regards to the unsub. He was EVIL. What he did to the women he kidnapped was unspeakable. I felt sick just reading those scenes. I don't know where Karin got her ideas but they were revolting.
Overall, I can say I enjoyed it and it grabbed my attention from beginning to end. Knowing this, I'm ready to continue with the rest of the books in this series. I already purchased Kisscut.

I found this to be an easy read, a page-turner with believable, likeable characters who I will want to read more about. The story was well developed but as this is my favourite genre I guessed who the perpetrator was quite early. Whilst this didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book, I felt that editing of it could have been better & it could have been around 10 pages shorter.
I have already downloaded the next book in the series & I intend to read a stand alone book by the same author in the future.

In this book, Sara Linton is back in her home town. She's a paediatrician, and the coroner for the Podunk Georgia town she lives in with her ex-husband, the local Chief of Police. It's your typical small town. Everyone knows your business, in that way only small town people are, but it's still a shock when the sister of one of the detectives turns up horrifically murdered. As the book/investigation progresses, we develop a picture of the town, and the relationships between Linton, Jeffery Tolliver (the Chief), and Lena Adams, the detective with the dead sister.
The book feels a little "first book" (i.e. a little busy, a little too much information), but it was a good read, all the same. There was one part, relating to Linton, that stretched credibility, but it was enjoyable, all the same.
