I gave it 3 stars mostly due to subject matter :-)
Grierson goes through every solo album, side-project & Eels record with a fine tooth comb, finishing with "Tomorrow Morning"(so I don't know why his called the book "Blinking lights & other revelations", perhaps it's the "revelations" part, not a particular imaginative title), giving level headed options of each release (sometime biographers can gush to much over the artist they are writing about, to the point that nothing they record in their option is actually bad). E is portrayed as quite a spiky character, who according to many of the people around him can be difficult to get along with, but the same could be said of most creative types, I think the part of the brain that allows them to interact with other people perhaps doesn't work properly.
There aren't many contemporary songwriters who lay their soul bare as much as E has done in his music, & Grierson has really done his research well to try & understand the process & ideas behind his songs.
So a fascinating read from a author who has done an exceptional job of trying to unlock such a complex & layered character as Mark Oliver Everett.
