I found it very hard to believe that a whole town of people stand by and watch Marilyn constantly walk all over Natalie, and not stick up for her. They were adults we're talking about here, not teenagers under the influnce of peer pressure, yet....they acted like a bunch of sniveling cowards. Not only did they not back her up, but they made sure her son suffered the consquiences, too. No other children were allowed to play with him, and that's so wrong on many levels! And to make things worse..... even her father, Arthur, was a total idiot for not taking Natalie's side or standing up for her. No....in fact; he did the unthinkable. He actually went behind Natalie's back and joined forces with this horrible woman, even after knowing full well the way this woman had treated Natalie and her son for years. I'm sure glad he's not my father, that's for sure!!!
And for the record, I didn't buy into the whole sudden chance of personality at the end, either. I know many, many single parents out there raisng their children all on their own, and I have never, ever seen them act the way Marilyn did. The woman even scared the heck out of her own child. I didn't much care for Natlie, either. I felt bad for her, yes. But if it was between this woman and my child's peace of mind and his happiness...you better believe I would have been all over that witch, in a heart beat!
CJ was okay, but he was just as 'whoa is me', as Natalie was. So his wife died overseas shortly after they'd had an argument, so what? It happens....time to move on. There were some redeeming characters in this story, though. I loved Natalie's sister, and the guys at the bar. I also thought CJ's family was hysterical, especially Father Basil.
Ms Farrell has a way of making her characters come to life and seem as real as your own friends. Don't miss this sweet, romantic, funny book.
