Just so you know, I'm moderately near sighted, but I found these lenses to be very finicky. Had to keep my eyes straight in the center
of the viewer as everything else was badly distorted. Tried with my glasses on and off, however the result was the same.
This will likely be thrown in a junk drawer, as it was a pain in the eyes to use.
In the end, the rest of the unit if fine, but it NEEDS BETTER LENSES!!!!
itself is mediocre. Having the head strap is nice, but the unit is awkward on the face and uncomfortable to wear for long. The optics aren't the best, and there is no way to adjust them, but once you get used to it and get them positioned correctly, they suffice, and some of the issues are related to low quality of videos and compression (that currently plagues mobile VR), and not entirely the fault of the optics. Having the button on the side is a plus, and it doesn't mess up the phone like the magnetic trigger. I was put off by the amount of light leaking into the experience because of the open nature of the unit, but that was easily fixed by making side flaps out of a little cardboard and tape, it is much better now. The FOV is better than the VR Box that I purchased a while back, but still not the greatest. I've thought about opening up the circular openings in the front and seeing if that helps a little. Also, for cardboard this little unit is actually pretty sturdy.
If you are looking for a cheap intro to VR that you can play with and experiment on, this is an affordable option, just don't expect a premium experience.
EDIT: After investigation I discovered that the experience can be improved by flipping one of the lens around so that the optics are focusing the same. By doing this I no longer have an issue with having a difficult time focusing on the experience or things being blurry or disorienting as my eyes try to independently focus, which creates an uncomfortable viewing experience, and is probably the reason for some of the complaints that people are making regarding quality of optics.
For only $10 it was definitely a worthwhile purchase. It hasn't revolutionized our entertainment experience or launched us into the future, but it really HAS amazed our kids. They get such a kick out of watching roller coasters and cute animal videos.
I would highly recommend that anybody with kids and a smartphone should get this or a similar product. It'll definitely keep them entertained.
Tip: When searching for cardboard-compatible videos on youtube, use the keyword "360" and not "VR". The reason why is that videos WITHOUT the "360" in their description tend to not be cardboard compatible and have a fixed point of view with no interactivity.
Side note: I found it odd that the one I got was actually an official Google Cardboard headset. The seller covered the Google logo with a Blisstime sticker.
IF YOU EXPERIENCE MOTION SICKNESS THEN DO NOT TRY VR. In all the reading about VR it was casually mentioned but yes, this made me very ill. I have problems with it in my personal life, and this certainly made me very sick and I only used it for about half an hour. I don't know if it would be the same with every headset/viewer but this one set it off big time.
Also if you use an iphone the quality of the video is very poor. Just not enough resolution there. I have an iphone 6 plus and you do get the screen door/pixelated effect and video is very blurry. Not as bad in rendered environments but actual real videos look very poor. This is not a knock on this product, it's just how it would be on any viewer I would imagine due to the resolution of the iphone. I don't know if a higher end viewer with better lenses would make a difference or not as far as being blurry. But you definitely need a higher resolution device than an iphone to see any quality at all.
Pros: Inexpensive but not cheap(the build). Comes with plenty of foam pads for cushion. Pre-assembled. Works as described.
Cons: If you're lying down, the lenses get really close to your eye, a little too close. Can fog up sometimes.
Overall: A good product for entry level VR.
Either way, don't let the head strap thing phase you. Decent product for a good price.
