Opening a new book by Kennedy Ryan always feels like coming home. I’m instantly pulled right into whatever fictional world she creates, and her writing never fails to amaze me. It doesn’t matter whether she’s writing about the music industry, social injustice, or the sports world, she writes it all flawlessly. BLOCK SHOT is just another example of why Kennedy Ryan is one of my top favorite authors. This story grabbed a hold of my heart, held it captive throughout over 10 years of Jared & Banner’s journey and ended with me grinning like crazy by the time I reached the last page.
This is the story of a clash of two titans - Jared & Banner, high-powered rival sports agents at the top of their game. Banner is the fiercely intelligent ‘killer with a heart’ who is brave and bold to the world but battles insecurities that so many of us face. Jared is in a whole other league of his own - a fun mix of a ruthless Jerry Maguire with a splash of Ari Gold from Entourage. But when these two are together...I swear, they almost lit my kindle on fire!
I don’t want to give away any of the story. This is a much lighter book than her past few novels, so don’t go into BLOCK SHOT scared or anxious in any way. Just read it, and prepare yourself to be swept away into Jared’s alpha hurricane!!! (less)
Block Shot had some of my very favorite tropes - friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, and second chance romance. Banner and Jared's story spans over a decade, beginning when a seemingly unlikely friendship forms their senior year of college. The book starts off with such a compelling and heartbreaking series of events, that the ripples reach all the way into the present. Banner's character arc and journey was especially heartfelt and relatable. There was so much I admired and loved about her and being privy to her inner thoughts, fears, and struggles was so powerful. She was driven, intelligent, fierce, and commanding, but she was also vulnerable and mortal. I loved that Block Shot was as much a romance between Banner and Jared as it was between Banner and herself. Kennedy Ryan truly excels at crafting characters that will challenge your beliefs, make you face uncomfortable truths, and are so very human and real.
"Good people may do bad things, wrong things,
but they are still good people,
still capable of doing amazing things..."
Jared was a force to be reckoned with just as much as Banner. He was a straight shooter, take what you want and damn the consequences kind of man. He makes no apologies or excuses for his behavior or actions, and mentions more than once that his moral compass spins and that he is not the "good guy". His brutal honesty and intensity, however, made him strangely endearing. The chemistry between Banner and Jared leapt off the page and their connection was palpable. They brought out the very best (and sometimes worst) in each other, but I loved that together, they could be exactly who they are without fear, shame, or judgement. The theme of being truly seen and accepted was so incredibly potent. I may not agree with all the decisions and actions that Jared and/or Banner took in the novel, but I do understand why and how they could make the choices that they did.
The secondary characters were just as important to the story, specifically Zo and Mama Morales. They both deliver some of the most poignant, heart wrenching, and honest dialogue in the book. Fans of Long Shot will also be happy to see appearances by Gus, Iris, Sarai, Kenan, and even a brief cameo by Lotus. The epilogue capped off the novel perfectly for our characters and I'm excited for Lotus and Kenan's book next!
Since Long Shot I have hope that someday Kennedy will give us Jared's story. August and Jared totally rocked my bookish boyfriends world. I still can't decide which one I love the most: heart open August or shamelessly Jared...
In the begining of Block Shot, Jared melted my heart but I thought later - why he's such a jerk? And Lord have mercy on me because I couldn't love him not :-) He's everything what every woman with the pulse would... adore, because come on .... who doesn't want commanding Prince Charming with dirty mouth?
He wanted one thing, but had a lot of troubles with IT ... or HER should I say? Ladies and Gentelman Banner is real #BlockShot for our alphamale.
Banner looks like perfectly Kennedy's "daughter".
For starters... she's a fighter!!!! She is where she is only thanks to her hard work. She's smart, ambitious and sexy young woman, with heart open for the right people.
Banner is very speciall... but we all knew that she's "lion's baby", right?
Block Shot left me with my emotions boiling up...all I wanted to say was WOW!
I finnished this book in speed of light but during writting this review I'm sure to re-read Block Shot as quickly as I can !
IN the end just wanted to add : I LOVE/ADMIRE/APPRECIATE/RESPECT Kennedy and her books because somwhere behind, in the background of her EVERY love stories, she ALWAYS passing important things .... That she also shows everyone on this planet that writting or reading romances isn't LAME or SHAME because every book can make a difference for all of US!
Kennedy... gah.... I love You more and more for bringing #JarBanMix in my life.

I felt the intense attraction between Banner and Jared who depict a relationship with growth and convincing transitions within the story timeline. Banner and Jared have both reached the pinnacle of their careers as sports agents for the elite of the basketball world. Jared wants to rule the world, he’s arrogant, powerful, sexy as anything, and knows exactly what he wants and I loved seeing him execute his desires. He made me laugh and swoon and sigh. There is something very sexy about a man who finds a woman he loves to distraction and puts her at the heart of his world, despite his alpha tendencies. Banner is the softer side of the story. Kindness and light. Strong and resilient. I love her so much and respected all the decisions she found herself having to make as the plotline thickened.
Every time Kennedy Ryan presents readers with a novel she gives something different in terms of character and plot. She keeps things fresh, organic and unique. Banner is a smart, super intelligent woman with inner strength, she has to be to succeed in her chosen career, but keeping it real, as always, Kennedy shows how even the strongest of women can have insecurities, vulnerabilities that can shape their thoughts feelings and behaviours and it is the execution of these aspects that made me warm to her so very much, especially in the early stages of the novel. This ensured that I rooted for her all the way through, felt her pain, her emotional turmoil and her passion. Her struggles resonated with me, like they will with so many other women who feel some kind of imperfection but have the capacity to overcome these feelings with unconditional and resounding love.
Kennedy Ryan takes you deep into the story, ensnares your heart with her characters and their emotions, each time fooling me into a new favourite, when in reality everything she writes is exceptional and unique and, in my top, top reads. The links made within the narrative of this novel are stunning. Subtle reminders of early happenings in the story, of experiences and thoughts linked back to later in the prose evoking strong feelings and emotion. There are moments that touched me deeply because of the way she weaves her prose, layering the nuances of her characters and their story, developing both convincingly. The story made me feel and hope and long, and will be one of my forever favourites.
I feel the author shouldn't have made Zo such a great guy or the relationship between Zo and Banner shouldn't have been explored in the detail it was. Even though the connection between Banner and Jared was evident I found it really hard to enjoy them being together as I wanted Zo to win too. I guess this feeling reiterates how good the book was written.
Banner is and always have been a “double-digit girl in a single-digit world”. The way she was and is dealing with all the insecurities and doubts, is something I could absolutely relate to. It is one thing that make me fall in love with her right from the beginning. But I also admire her strength, her drive, her passion and her heart to achieve what she wants even when others are doubting her.
Those are the same character traits that attracted Jared right from the beginning and made him fall for her even more. He always saw so much more than just her outer appearance. He is just as driven and a hard one to deal with. Right from the beginning he claims himself to be selfish and always gets what he wants whatever it takes. Playing dirty including. But it’s also something that makes you fall for him hard, because the way he tries to persuade Banner to give him a second chance? SWOON!
These two have a history and I loved that we got to see it in a straight timeline with a few flashbacks to the important stages. The characters are never wavering from their true nature, just developing over time and mature just as is to be expected when growing up to become adults. It is their story that needs to be told the way it is. You can’t deny the chemistry between these two. You can’t ignore those heat of moments and the reactions resulting from those.
Block Shot is so well written and thoughtfully composed. It has the right amount of romance, thoughtfulness, heat, anxiety, heartbreak and credibility. I was emotionally invested from the first to the last word. From feeling so close to Banner because I could relate to her insecurities, to wanting to bump a pillow because there’s no Jared around here, to like and dislike secondary characters and swooning again over Iris and August.
Kennedy Ryan just has this wonderful amazing talent to write, I can’t get enough of and just want to read the next book of hers. Block Shot is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2018!
I am a sucker for a friends to lovers, second chance romance, and Block Shot had all the feels.
This isn't just a fun, happy go lucky story. Ms Ryan doesn't shy away from the harder, darker topics. And she does them well. Extremely well.
Block Shot is real, it is raw, it had me running the whole gamut of emotions as I laughed, I cried, I threw my kindle across the room in anger and frustration.
Jared and Banner's relationship has never been smooth sailing, and with each twist and turn their lives took, my heart needed to find out what was happening in their lives.
I so want to be Banner when I grow up. She is the whole kit and kaboodle. She is strong, she is compassionate, her insecurities fly off the page and there is some of her in each and every one of us. I just adore every single thing about her.
Jared is frustrating, oh so frustrating. But you can't help but like him - even when he is a douche! You have to admire a man (or woman) who knows what they want and don't give up on it.
I really enjoyed getting to know a bit more of August and Iris and Sarai from Long Shot too in this story.
Even though this is only my second KR read, she has become an instant one-click author for me.
I am really looking forward to the next book in the Hoops Series, Hook Shot. I also need to go back and get my hands on every other book she has written!
Give me more!
“She is day and I am night. When day and night are absolutely equal, it’s equinox. Banner is my equinox. My equal.” - Jared
Banner is an intelligent, determined, spirited , loyal, and compassionate woman with self image vulnerabilities in the competitive male dominated industry of sports. She knows what she wants and is determined to be herself and follow her morals and values .
“we work in a jungle and are surrounded by alpha males and apex predators. Everyone’s looking to be the last one standing, to be at the top of the food chain, and they sometimes don’t care who gets hurt in the process. Don’t lose your heart. Don’t lose your soul. Don’t lose your compass, and that doesn’t mean don’t win. Win. Fight. Conquer. You have just as much right to success as anyone who works for it. It may be a jungle, and they may be lions . . .” She pauses, her eyes finding mine again, holding mine. “But the daughter of a lion is still a lion, and this is your domain.” - Banner
Jared is the opposite. He too works in the same industry but he’s ruthless, determined , takes what he wants no matter how he has to go ahead and do it. And Banner is who and what he wants and nothing is going to stand in his way .
I really enjoyed their story !! There’s a ‘but’ though. I usually really don’t like cheating stories . Unfortunately this one has cheating in it. So if your looking for a ‘safe’ read this is not one. BUT I enjoyed it regardless ! Kennedy has a talented way with words , she writes beautifully drawing you in and capturing in the world she’s built !
This book could easily be read as a stand alone, however it is tied to other characters in the other books in the story . The world building of this series is awesome so I do recommend reading the first book too and I’m moving straight into the last book now too ;)
