Blockade Runner picks up the story of our heroes and begins another exciting adventure for Liam, Tabby, and the rest of the gang. Do yourself a favor, Pick up the series, and get ready for a new universe!
-The action was typical of the series, with a mix of personal and ship combat
-Liam took a bit of a backslide into angst / touchy-feely
-The overall changes and expansion in the PT universe was definitely a big add
-Lots of time/development of surrounding characters. Ada, for example, is a bit more fleshed out now.
-Some interesting suffering/losses that added a lot to the crew personas and made them hardcore
-Liam doesn’t let the confederated planets get the best of him in true style. Really liked the “screw you” moment.
-We get some new interesting players that orbit Liam’s events, we also lose one or two (don’t want to spoil it for you)
-The end with the Kroerak was very unsatisfying and didn’t really resolve things. Really? They just got up and left? That’s not the end of anything.
-The super secret beat the Kroeraks thing? Kind of a ripoff from older sci-fi but I guess options are limited.
-Nicholas wound up in a role that fit him very well and would be a nice setup for another offshoot story.
-How Liam’s girl fit into the feline’s culture was nice.
-Unusually high amount of sexual tension going on in this book. Kinda thought we might see some harem action break out for a couple of seconds.
-Anino’s story about what was going on with him was really glossed over and didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.
-The hive intelligence seemed to get a magic get out of jail card there at the end that was unsatisfying
-Really would have liked to saw loose nuts come out further ahead at the end. After doing so much for humanity, they basically get a doorknob up the backside? Very unfulfilling.
-There was a helpful recap/primer of people in the front to refresh you on the characters. Big plus.
-Author mentioned this was a much longer story… not sure I noticed as a reader. It’s still a “done in one day” book.
-I like that they keep getting ships/tech/whatever, but it seems like they have to start over with something new every book. That’s a bit frustrating. It would be nice to start building up some cool developments via long term investment and customization in some of their fleet. We lost the hotspur over a single line in this story. Just “oh yeah that got used till it was blown up”. What about the suits too? Just gone. Yeah, we don’t need those anymore. I’m sure it all makes sense down the road, just frustrating.
-Always love the running joke how Liam has to fix a certain ship system.
