Just wanted to add a quick update: Vinny O'Hare let me know via Facebook that the XML Image Sitemap Plugin (that I spoke of being out of date) is now incorporated into the Yoast SEO plugin that I'm already using!
The Appendix at the End is really handy! Make sure you check that out as it lists lots of handy tips and plugins, like Wordpress SEO Plugin by Joost de Valk, Use postname for permalinks in Wordpress, Google XML Sitemaps by Arne Brachhold and links to submit to Google Webmaster Tools.
There's a wealth of information available online for free on YouTube and blogs but extracting and then organizing all that content into a coherent, easy to read book takes time and work which is why most Kindle books are worth paying for.
I felt that this ebook was more for the advanced beginner (as compared to a real novice like me). They assumed that you would know some of the what & how of basic SEO (such as permalinks, meta tags, etc). However, I did like the format and all the extras included in the end. Overall, this is a really great little ebook that is packed full of tips & helpful information.
This time rather than watching/listening to the webinar - I was given an eBook version of the transcript (Published via NightFirePublications). Although some would prefer hearing over reading - I found that it fit into my schedule much easier and it also gave me the ability to go back and read again the concepts that I was uncertain of or wanted to know more about. Also, at the end of the transcript there were pages of links to the concepts and suggestions made within the conversation. That was AWESOME for me as I could easily click the link and see the web page with further explanations in front of me immediately without having to go out and search on my own.
This discussion/webinar focused mainly on the concept of helping direct traffic to your site via SEO. Hosted by the crew at BloggingABC's and top bloggers (Deborah Carney, Vinny O'Hare, Tricia Meyer and Eric Nagel) it was both informative and humorous. And surprisingly - it was very easy to read.
If you are a blogger like me, you set out on this journey with a purpose in mind. For me it originally started some years ago when I wanted to hold myself accountable for some things - so I posted in a different blog about my spiritual journey, etc. Then gradually, I found the world of blogging outside of simply typing into an online journal. I discovered thousands of blogs out there and networks and things like giveaways and blog hops and review programs. I figured if I could share my thoughts, hone my writing skills and get things for free at the same time - it was well worth it! Thus You Brew My Tea began in June of 2010.
Due to different situations over the last year and a half, at times it's been nearly stagnant and at others (like now) I post something nearly every single day. I began using affiliate marketing a few months into my journey on this blog - but truly haven't utilized it to the fullest potential because sites with tons of ads and no content annoy me - why would I want to annoy someone else? But still, I'd love to have more traffic on my blog and I'd love for this blog to make me money. Who wouldn't like to do something they enjoy AND make money doing it?
SEO Basics for Bloggers goes over various thoughts and ideas on how to increase traffic by increasing your search engine ranking. Utilizing keywords, better post titles, niche posts and improving HOW you post from your blog will not only increase traffic to your site but also eventually earn you more money. This transcript from the webinar/podcast for BloggingABC's has a lot of great information about how to get your name and your site out there with more quality posts being hit on every day.
At the end of the day I blog because I enjoy writing and it's a fun outlet for what could be a stressful time in my life. If I never did another review or giveaway - if I never had another follower or "like" on Facebook - I would still be here every day posting my thoughts, feelings and beliefs. I will go through the suggestions made in this transcript and make a few changes to my blog in hopes of getting a higher rank, but I am not going to stress myself over it too much. If a blog is only there to make money - then it's not something I am interested in viewing. I want to read substance (along with the fluff). I hope that my readers are quality readers and do too.
