The Ring, who oversees vampiric activity in to avoid human exposure, hires Thierry as a consultant. He and Sarah travel to Las Vegas to hunt a serial killing vampire. Thierry has had public arguments with Bernard; he threatens to kill him if he fails to turn over items that could harm their species and humans. When Bernard is murdered, Thierry is the only suspect. The Ring Enforcer Markus places Thierry under house arrest while he investigates the homicide. All the evidence affirms Thierry killed Bernard. Sarah begins an inquiry that fails to prove otherwise; so she busts her fiancé out of his jail; leaving both of them as fugitives from the Ring.
This is the first of a revised Immortality Bites urban fantasy series with a much darker suspense than the original chick lit tales. The heroine is an independent modern day Canadian while her beloved is a Renaissance Era vamp struggling with her feistiness that he cherishes deadly but fearful that will end her undead life rather quickly. This is an engaging paranormal mystery that ensures the Rowen mythology seems real as a fledgling amateur sleuth and her experienced "elderly" partner search for a killer while eluding the Ring.
Besides, I could not resist that oh-so-perfect title.
Here's our setup: The protagonist, Sarah, is a fledgling vampire who's engaged to a really old "master" vampire. Thierry's dragged into serving in The Ring -- basically the vampire community's secret service, responsible for making sure that vampires keep their existence invisible and that they don't actually hurt anybody. (Today's modern vampire goes to blood banks, rather than bites anyone... well, usually.)
Except Thierry and Sarah immediately run into several problems, including a vampire who's leaving dead bodies all around Las Vegas, and a child-beauty pageant entrant who's also a vampire (and a chain smoker, when she can manage it). And then the fun starts...
This could have been dumb. Or it could have been serious (I don't dare say "deadpan"). Michelle Rowan found the happy balance between the two: a cheerful 20-something woman who ALSO is a vampire with Attitude but without any meanness). Sarah has a sense of humor, but mostly this is a good "Just tell me a story" novel, with interesting characters, a fun setup, an a whodunnit that kept me guessing.
Mainly, it's good smile-to-yourself reading for a long plane trip. For instance, Sarah needs to get by a bouncer type who's between her and her man, and decides that flirting might work. Or a bribe. And she contemplates... "Shave off the mustache and this guy wasn't half-bad-looking in a large-thug-bodyguard kind of way. He was, however, in desperate need of a makeover."
Need some escapist fiction to make you smile? This will do it.
Yeah, kind of confusing. But like I said, I basically just missed quite a lot of back story, but I tried to not let that bother me. So of course mentioning old friends and whatnot and the unsaid history there, leaves you wondering a bit, but overall, I didn't struggle too much.
Thierry is a 600 year-old vampire engaged to his fledging Sarah. He's been "offered" a new job he can't refuse to be apart of the Ring--basically the vampire justice system that keeps vamps in line. He must go to Vegas and basically tell a vampire child beauty contestant that she must stop entering pageants, because it is a risk to the vampire society which must be kept secret from humans. And Sarah agrees to come along.
Where the mystery lies is when Thierry's predecessor and old acquaintance is murdered. And the number one suspect is Thierry. The Ring sends in its enforcers to exact justice, but Sarah knows that Thierry would never hire a hunter to kill a vampire, no matter how much he may dislike said vampire. So she does a bit of investigating of her own.
I enjoyed this mystery quite a bit. I didn't foresee who our murderer is, because there's also a lot more going on. Such as another serial killer killing humans one a day for the past week, in a way that is very much like a vampire taking a bite out of their necks.Read more ›
