From the Inside Flap
Thor made quick work of a rusted chain holding the doors closed and I ran inside, slamming the door behind me. The linoleum floor of the hallway was half covered in slimy moss and half peeling up at the seams. The building smelled like stagnant water and rot. Above me the ceiling bowed in, ceiling panels swollen with water. Goddess this place was a death trap. What was I thinking?
The floor seemed to tilt under me and I clutched at the wall for support. My pulse pounded through my temples, the impact of the recoil still echoing in my brain. I had to keep moving. I pushed off the wall and staggered down the hallway.
I'd barely gone halfway down when the door behind me slammed open, the sound like a gunshot. The sound ignited a spark of pain in my ears that forced me to my knees. A Renfield entered the doorway and roared when he saw me. At the end of the hall, a set of double doors beckoned. On hands and knees I crawled for the door. I managed to get on my feet and slam my shoulder into the push bar and pop the door open. I ducked inside and pushed the door shut, bracing my feet on the slippery floor and wedging my shoulder into the door.
I looked around and quailed. I'd stumbled into the gym. A wide open space with skylights, windows on every wall, and worse, at least four other sets of doors. The Renfield in the hallway slammed into the door and my shoulder exploded with pain. I scrambled to get my feet back under me and hold the door before he could hit it again. As I was setting my shoulder I noticed dark shadows gathering at the windows, and one at the skylight.
Darkest night, I was going to die, surrounded by Renfields and all alone.
I had to get out of here. The door slammed into me again. The impact wrung a cry out of me but I bit it back and slammed the door closed again. I didn't wait for the Renfield to get himself reset. I bolted for the far door, praying I could make it outside.
Glass and metal splintered as windows caved in on all sides of me. Renfields burst in from either side and I poured on the speed, running for the opposite set of doors. The vampires howled and closed in for the kill.
The skylight shattered and glass rained down on me from above. I skidded to a stop as a shadow landed in a crouch in front of me. Splinters of glass dug into my legs as I tried to backpedal.
The dark form leapt at me and I ducked, even as I knew it would be useless. I braced myself for the feel of claws and fangs sinking into my flesh, and the bitter taste of failure. All I wanted was to go back home, and hug Ava and Jasper. And tell mom that I was sorry I'd failed her, failed dad.

Kotori comes around to make sure Roxy isn’t shirking her duty to Finn, as something hasn’t been right with him since the end of book two. Knowing she can’t leave him on what seems to be a path of self destruction, she sets out with Kotori to see how they can fix things.
Throw in a tournament in the Pit, a psychotic vampire and his army of suped up Renfields, a dark Prince, and Kotori’s knowledge of her father’s past, and Roxy has herself an adventure.
Once again I’m left with so many questions - what really caused Samuel to leave the Slayers? What does Eloise forcefully try to get Tyee to share with Roxy? What is Roxy truly capable of? And where did O’Malley really get all his supplies/experiments?
What I love most in this book is the development of Roxy’s character. She really delves into what motivates her and where her heart lies - in Seattle or in Boston. She has to discern when friends become family and what is worth fighting for or leaving behind. We also see some growth of the side characters and I can’t wait to see even more of them!
I love the budding friendship/camaraderie between Kotori and Roxy, as well as Roxy learning how important she has become to Mrs. Chu and the shifter crew. I’m a little wary of Tanner and the Tarim, but we’ll see what happens next!
The major curveball at the end of this story makes me even more eager to dive into book four!
