Back in his home town, memories of his youth come flooding back. We get to know our hero more in depth through flashbacks from his childhood. We get to see the real Jarvis Mann. The man who had a past that changed for the better. We get to see how Jarvis was saved from going down the wrong path by some tough love from his father and a caring cop friend. Getting to know about his family and background add depth to this already familiar character.
R. Weir has a magnet of some sort that pulls you in to a story as soon as you begin to read it. Jarvis Mann seems like any man you could run into at the store or even Subway. He’s witty and sarcastic, there’s nothing dull about him. That makes his character a bit more realistic. His emotions and thoughts also add to the “realness” of his character. He’s not just a hero, he’s a human being like all of us.
I’m glad I started reading this series because I have enjoyed all of Jarvis’ cases. They are intense and mysterious at times. Wonderful job! I can’t wait to see what happens next with Jarvis, and his crime fighting self. Well done!
He takes the case to help his sister-in-law who feels that his brother is possibly cheating on her. Scorned women with cheating husbands seems to be the majority of his cases these days. He does not have the best relationship with his brother, but loves his sister-in-law and niece so he wants to help in any way that he can. As suspected, it looks like his brother is indeed cheating, but then in what we've come to expect with our favorite PI-the case takes a turn for the dangerous. His brother is in more trouble than anyone ever expected which places Jarvis, once again, in the line of fire.
With all of this trouble going on, his personal life also becomes more complicated. We meet his old high school girlfriend who is currently single, and completely open to hooking up with our not-so-single detective. He loves Melissa but it hasn't been an easy relationship, and now he's in another state being tempted by an old flame.
This series continues the theme of twists and turns both personally and professionally. It is very fast paced, and well written. Love that we get glimpses into Jarvis' childhood and family ties. Can't wait to read more in the series!
Jarvis Mann returns to his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa in this latest installment. Readers get incredible insight into Jarvis as he flashes back to his childhood while he is working his current case. As he visits old haunts, he is welcomed as a crime fighting hero (due to his last case in Twice as Fatal) by family friends and ex-girlfriends alike.
Jarvis tries to maintain a long-distance relationship with Denver girlfriend, Melissa, while checking on his older brother Flynn at the request of Flynn's wife, Helen. Nothing is ever straightforward and simple for Jarvis Mann, so this case of familial infidelity quickly escalates into a murder and money laundering case. It's personal, so Jarvis Mann calls in all his owed favors. Nothing like knowing people from low places....
Weir's storytelling improves with each novel. In Blood Brothers, Weir has excellently developed all the involved primary and secondary characters. The extra insight into leading man, Mann, really makes him empathetic. Mann tried so hard to be a good guy, and sometimes--actually most of the time--he avoids temptation and is a stand-up guy. The addition of Weir's dry humor throughout the story gave me a few chuckles while reading. The plot twists and turns are doled out so that tension and suspense is maximized.

Blood Brothers is R. Weir's best Jarvis Mann novel to date. An excellent, suspenseful detective mystery.
