In the first book of the series we were introduced to Jenny, Sean, Jack, and Jessabelle four teenagers caught in the middle of a battle for two worlds against forces much bigger than they are. In Blood Creek Beast we narrow the focus and come firmly into the next part of the story through the eyes of Jack and Jessabelle. They're on opposite sides of the portal between our world and 'Round the Bend and have stories running in parallel.
I find that the tighter focus on two character voices works better for me. I feel drawn much more deeply into this book even though I very much enjoyed the first one. The differences between the storylines and the two worlds allows the author to play with tropes of Fantasy and Contemporary Fantasy in a way that's both fun and satisfying. Jack is still my favorite character, though I liked finally really getting into Jessabelle's head in a way we didn't get to before.
We get some very strong side characters in this volume and a nice broadening of the world Round the Bend and a deeper glimpse into what's happening in the shadows of our own world.
The ending comes too soon and it's not exactly a cliffhanger, but it does leave me hungry for the next book. Trouble isn't just coming at this point. It's here and our heroes are running out of time to stop the man in the white suit before two worlds pay the price.
I enjoyed getting to know the character of Blood Creek Beast. The leads in this volume are different than the first book and the difference is well presented without being overly done to be mocking or condescending to the old or new characters.
The pacing kept me engaged and I quickly went through the roughly 250 pages. The story has a solid ending for the tale being told here with a strong cliffhanger that has left me with anticipation for book 3 of the series.
