Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

After escaping a Russian pogrom in 1903, teenage siblings Zalman and Rachel are later separated by fire in Rotterdam; each believes the other is dead. Their lives and fortunes appear in alternate chapters, Rachel in England, Zalman in the United States, over the next 60 years. Though the contrasts and parallels between the two families are interesting and Zalman's rise to power (and fortune) through newspapers and publishing is compelling, the book is not distinguished. Its dramatic tension rests heavily on how these two will meet, yet that does not occur until the next-to-last page, despite some possible opportunities earlier. The election of a fictional U.S. president, a friend of Zalman's, also seems out of place. For libraries with large fiction budgets, where family sagas are popular.
